I know that every country has it's positives and negatives, but I haven't read too many negatives about Thailand. If you browse other forums, such as China off-topic, 90% of the posts are EFL teacher's complaints. Other than low salary, a lack-luster education system, and corruption in Government and police what bothers you about Thailand? Do you have any stories that could convince me NOT to make the move to Thailand? |

Wow, if that doesn't bother you, what would? Actually teachers in Thailand complain a lot. They just don't do it here. Check out Ajarn forum for the real complaints. |

I'm not too picky about certain things... I'm teaching in China. Which has two of the three things listed. I could handle not making as much money if I were in a nice environment.
Thanks for the tip |

Then Thailand just might be the place for you. It is a nice place to live. |

I love it here (Thailand). I don't let the issues you mentioned bother me. Everywhere has problems. |

Just a question for you guys. Since it's cheaper there, if I'm living in a certain country (said country seems to get threads locked) would it be possible to land a job by sending my resume via e-mail or just trek over there and go for it. I'm kind of uneasy with the idea of hitting a country without, though my savings would last quite awhile. |

Hiring is done almost exclusively in country. You'll have no problem finding work. Since you have some spare change, take your time and find a position you are really comfortable with. Accepting a job because you feel you have to could lead to disappointment down the road.
Some advice: If you want to work for a government school, deal with the schools directly. Avoid agencies! |

Same as it is here. They have a tendency to "lose" important documents. I'm looking for a job now and they're crawling out of the network. They (the recruiters) get 1000 usd to get a teacher to the school and they lie about everything.

Are you talking about schools or agencies? Because they can be as bad as each other. |

MOD EDIT. I've educated myself about the immigration process so when I go for a new job, I do all the processing myself at the immi office. Here, unless you take an official public school position, you are gambling with everything on the table. |

richie, you got me laughin today. Look at the site in my signature and you will see just how many teachers are complaining about Thailand. Only a handful of Thailand based teachers are here on Dave's, the rest of the teachers in Thailand frequent Thailand based teaching forums.
One thing to keep in mind, richie, is that come next year, you need an education degree to get anything more than 60 day tourist visa to Thailand. Think long and hard about that. |
