Hey everyone. So, I know this topic has been brought up before but I thought I'd try to get some current info.
I'm going to be moving to Chile in May. I hope to book a flight very soon from NY to Santiago. So here are my questions:
How have you booked tickets, online or travel agents?
If you've ever gotten a great deal, how did you get it?
Have you ever changed your flight dates? Is this possible with e-tickets?
So, on a somewhat related thought, is the jet lag bad when traveling from the US? I plan on starting work basically right after I get there. Is that feasable? |

I always book tickets online. I have been doing it for years.

I set up a farewatch at www.travelocity.com and they email me with any upcoming seat sales. It is one of the easiest ways to catch the deals when they come up.

I have never had a reason to change my flight dates. It is possible to change the dates with an e-ticket, but that depends on the type of ticket you buy. Just make sure that you read the terms and conditions before make the final purchase.

That all depends what time zone you are leaving from. Chile is GMT -3 (or -4 if it is daylight savings time). If you are coming from the west coast, it might be a little painful for you. It really all depends on the person. During the flight and when you first get on the ground, make sure that you eat light and stay hydrated. This will help immensely.
Buena Suerte!

I'm going to Chile in May as well. Probably mid May. I'm going to book my tickets online, but am still looking for a good sale. |

I don't have any tips for you on flights, since I was in Chile so long ago, most of my info is out of date.
However about Jet Lag I will say this.
True Jet lag is not really an issue, because there is not the big jump in time change. Depending on where you are travelling from, it might only be one or two hours different. But long flight are exhuasting and can be dehydrating like Danielita mentioned.
But the season-light change can be disorientating. I left Chile on Dec. 22 (1993) on a 9pm flight. I saw the final glow of the sun on the horizon as the plane took off, it was afterall, the longest day of the year. I arrived in my final destination, Des Moines Iowa, about 4:o0pm Dec. 23. The sun was setting as my parents car pulled out of the airport. We got home and it was totally dark. I unpacked, and puttered around the house, looked through a pile of mail that had arrived in my absence, and I began to feel like it was very late at night. It was afterall pitch dark outside. My stomach was rumbling, probably just becuase the plane meals had been unsatifactory, but I took that as another sign that it was very late at night. Finally, I asked my mom, "Aren't we ever going to eat dinner?". "Well, yeah, but it's only 5:30" she said. I'd thought it had to have been 8 or so. |

Hey Ai,
I am going to traveling to Santiago in Feb 07' to teach ESL with CIEE. I got my plane ticket for about 1100 round trip, from Feb to December. Although the end date is scheduled for some time in October, they said I could call in around April to change the end date for only $25, because then they will have the flights for December, got it through STAtravel.com I am not a student but I'm 23 and their discounts apply till your 26. I bet they could still help you out if you are older, no harm in trying. Best of luck.
