i'm flying into taipei at the end of the month and i'm debating whether or not to bring my hookah and shisha. for those unfamiliar with shisha, it's simply a type of molasses-coated tobacco that is smoked with a water pipe.
to my knowledge it's perfectly legal in taiwan as it is in every other country i've been to. does anyone know for certain? if it is legal, will i be harassed at the airport anyway?
can hookahs/shisha be purchased in taipei? |

You probably won't have trouble getting it through. It's not illegal.
Work on your punctuation and capitalization when sending out resumes.
I know that you didn't ask about this and
it's off topic but I just received several resumes
that had bad punctuation and I deleted them.
The other teachers working in my school said they'd have done the same thing. No offense
intended. |

The OP has not sent you a resume or submitted an academic paper for grading; he's made a post on a message board. This is not where one produces their most polished writing, nor should one be expected to do so. Writing posted here is not indicative of an author's capability to produce 100% error-free works, displaying punctuation proficiency of the highest order. This is a relaxed genre where people really don't appreciate nit-pickers. Given that OP showed consistency with his lack of capitalization in his post (he didn't use capitals at all), it's pretty clear that he doesn't have a problem with the rules for using capitals; he merely didn't bother to hit "caps lock" when writing his post. It's pretty clear that his lack of capitalization was intentional. I'm willing to bet he'd know how to use the caps lock key if he were writing a cover letter. Why bother him about it? I could criticize your writing, wood-- even in your latest post-- but I choose not to. This isn't a genre that demands perfect writing and, anyway, I have better things to do than nit-pick. Seriously, you should find something better to do as well. |

Why bother him about it? Well....maybe you have a point there. I realize that most of the people who send me resumes are intentional. They ignore basic things. I've already explained that I intended no offense. I was only trying to offer some helpful advice. Seems to me that, even so, I've managed to offend you. You claim that you have better things to do than nit-pick. Well, good on you. |

Wood,
you seem unable to separate people who send you resumes from those who post on this message board. Your statement :
Quote: |
most of the people who send me resumes are intentional |
shows you misunderstood a central point in my last post. I'll restate it. OP (the original poster who started this thread) didn't use any capitals at any time in his post. That shows that he does not have a problem understanding the rules of capitalization, rather that he intentionally chose not to use them in his post. If he used capitals sometimes, and not others, that would be an indication that he he doesn't understand the rules for their use. OP was consistent in his lack of capitals and it showed that OP couldn't have been bothered to write formally on a freakin' internet forum; it isn't a sign that he needs to brush up on his skills. The great irony here is that, if you exclude OP's lack of capitals, his post is actually very well written.
This is an internet forum; it is not a job application process or an academic setting. If someone here chooses to write while ignoring some of the rules of polished penmanship for expediency sake, more power to him.

I do. However, I have little patience for posters who feel the need to point out every error in fellow posters' writing, as if they are indicative of any short-coming on the posters' part-- or that an omission in writing here is the same as a poorly written resume. What a farce. It's simply arrogant of you to suggest that OP needs to work on his writing. It's off-topic, completely uncalled for and runs counter to the purpose of both this forum and the reason for OP's enquiry.
In short:
---formal genres such as resume cover letters and academic essays require strict adherence to the rules of composition
---informal genres do not demand such precision
---Dave's Cafe does not qualify as a formal genre
---Participants know this and write with less attention to rules
---Therefore, it's inappropriate to harrass people who are writing in a manner that fits the genre, to demand that these people improve their writing or to conclude that they are committing the same offence as those who submit poorly written employment applications. |

not to be an air marshall or anything, but it seems that this thread needs a rescue from being hijacked.
"wood!!!! tayouansteve!!! put your hands up and step away from the keyboard, move slowly away from the reply button and no one will have to get hurt.... "
TO RECAP FOR THE OP: hookas, shisha, water bongs, whatever you want can be found here, and its unlikely that you'd have any problem bringing them in if you already have one.....naturally, one would want to avoid additional questioning at an airport at any costs, especially in a country that offers the death penalty for drug trafficking, so the easiest route may just be to purchase upon arrival.... |

Hmmmm, "hookahs" and "shishas." You don't want to know what I was thinking. In English or Yiddish they both look pretty bad. |
