I am so annoyed with Slovak banks charging people stupendous amonuts of money for simple transactions that are usually free in the UK. This is especially annoying when you don't actually earn that much money.

Yeah, they are still nickel-and-diming us in the Czech Rep too. It is annoying. Hopefully improving, though. I remember when we were only allowed to enter the bank one at a time (line on the sidewalk).

I just pay them and shut up. And count my blessings I'm allowed to wait INSIDE these days. Hopefully someone has a better idea?

To reduce the charges the first thing is change your account so that statements are only sent quarterly, every six months or evenonce a year. They charge something like 60-100 crowns to send you a statement.

Second - do as few transactions as possible. I withdraw all I need or a month at one time. Sure, 5 crowns isn't a lot but do it every day and we're talking 200 crowns.

If you need an account to handle foreign money you're just screwed.

Also if you need a business account you're also screwed and no way out of it. Ceska Sporzitelna offers the cheapes business account but even that's over 200 a month. The others are closer to 500.
