Look at the FAQ for a partial answer to your questions.

Laptops already have built-in power converters, and you should ask your dealer if there area issues. But, it depends on where you live in Japan, as the FAQ describes.

You can plug in your labtop and alarm clock fine. The voltage is very near to what it is in Canada. No problems. However, you should always use a powerbar or surge protector when operating a computer.

Along the same lines, I recently purchased a Panasonic video camera. The adaptor (which will power the camera or charge the battery) specifies it will work between 110-240 volts. So, will it still work on Japanese 100 volts, or should I try and find the Matsusheeta (Panasonic Japan) equivalent? In other words, is this a scheme by Panasonic/Matsusheeta to make sure that equipment for other markets won't work in Japan?
