|
|
I got a 3 year work visa last summer, but only worked a 6 month contract. Are there any restrictions regarding remaining in Japan on this same visa, yet not working for a couple months? I want to do some travelling and such before getting in on the spring hiring bonanza. I don't want to be violating any immigration laws. My guess is that the visa is still good and I can stay without making any changes, but my guesses have been known to be wrong.
Thanks for your feedback. I did try the search feature but didn't find any answer specific to my question.
Season's Greetings. |

Your visa is your own so you should be fine if you want to go travelling. But, if you leave the country make sure you get a re-entry permit or your visa will be invalidated when you return. |

Yep, I have a 1-year multiple re-entry permit, so no problem there.
I was wondering if Immigration required some sort of proof that you had enough income to stay without working, or proof that you are actively seeking employment.
A follow-up question, somewhat related: if I clear out of my current residence in Japan, leave the town, with no plan of returning, what is the status of my Alien Registration Card, which is registered at my current town hall? Is it still ok? Or do I need to get some sort of No Fixed Address version, now that I'm travelling around and staying in different parts of the country for short periods of time?
Thanks very much. |

If you have a 3 year working visa then why do you only have a one-year re-entry permit? If you have a multiple re-entry permit then it should be valid for the entirety of your visa. If you renew your visa then you need to get a new permit.
Immigration won't ask where you're working.
Register your new address at your new city or ward office when you get a place. There's no need to start volunteering information that you are homeless. Your Alien Registration Card is something that you will keep providing that you fill in a re-entry form at the airport detailing when you are coming back. |

Yes, you're right, my mistake. Re-entry permit good for duration of visa.
Otherwise, I gather that I am in violation of no immigration laws by not working for a couple months, as long as my visa is valid.
Many thanks. Next time I have a single malt and a smoke, I'll tip one to ya.
Regards,
