HCT just announced that its pay scales would be upped 12% in July. This comes straight from the V.C.'s email so it is not a rumor. In addition, the previously shared medical insurance costs will become free for all faculty. This puts an additional 800dhs a month in your pocket if you have a wife and two children. I'm not sure what singles as I'm not one.

It's less than most wanted but better than many expected, as we expected nothing for some time now.

They did this at the same time, however, that they announced that this years Eid holiday would only be one day. Three days if you count Friday and Saturday (i.e. the weekend) as special paid holiday time. So only Sunday is Eid, and then Monday we're off for New Years day. Too bad for those who made plans. At least the pay raise will soften the blow.

An interesting question about the increments in the new pay raise. If your not at the top of the scale you usually get a 7% raise each year. This has been changed to 4% guaranteed and up to 4% more based on merit. That's 8%, sounds good! But wait! The previous poster just said that we won't get increment this year. So take the 12% raise and minus it by the 7% increment that you wont get this year and you have a 5% raise in real terms. Exciting!

But now, while most people always used to get the 7% now only 4% is guaranteed. If the additional four becomes hard to get than you have to minus 3% each year from your base. 5%-3%=2% net raise after the first year and a -1% raise after the second, etc. Not sounding as good as it once did.

The no increment thing really kills it. If they kept increments as normal for this year then a 12% plus a 4% t- 8% increment for hard work and dedication we would be looking at a real 10%-14% raise. Maybe nobody worked hard enough this year to be rewarded for their effort with an increment.

The health insurance is still nice especially for those of us with kids.

But the biggest issues, such as additional funding for housing and increased money for increasingly expensive schools are still left off of the new contract.
