I searched the forum and the info is there no doubt, but I can't find it. My question is, should I have my police record in hand when I go to Taiwan, or can I get it later? I'm a US citizen by the way.
Also, where do you get the records? I called my consulate and they didn't seem to know. They said I might need to ask the FBI!

There was no criminal record check done for me when I got my job here. I don't think you have anything to worry about, unless a school specifically asks for it (which would be very odd) |

HESS asks for a criminal record check... which in Canada you get from your local police station...it's probably the same in the US... it probably wouldn't hurt to have it to bring along with you... |

It's like asking if you need to bring a sweater. If it's too hot and you have it, you can always take it off. If it's too cold and you don't have it, you can't put it on. |

I think this man, or woman, is a troll.
The person asked "my consulate?" What, is this person warped!? Who would be asking him or her for a criminal record, by the way? Why does t he op's designation say "Japan?" Or why would this person be asking this if he, or she, were just coming here? How would they know they needed a background check if it weren't but HESS? And if it 'were' HESS, they would've told him exactly where to go, given him the form and everything.
This person's copying some previous posts of others here, I believe, in order to make them look bad.
Naughty, naughty. |

Criminal records checks are generally not needed except, it would appear, for Hess.
I have had criminal record checks done for Japan, Taiwan and UK and usually this has been arranged through their respective consulates / embassies or trade offices.
I would keep using the search function because there was an in depth discussion about this a couple of years ago. I seem to remember the proceedure for the US seemed somewhat more complicated than for other countries (but I could be wrong, it was a couple of years ago and my memory is not good). You could also post and search on www.forumosa.com . |

Criminal record check process:
http://www.saigonesl.com/index.htm
click on Job Resources and then Work Permit/Taxes (on the pie chart).
If you have any other questions about obtaining criminal record checks I would post on the Vietnam board as they are required to legally teach in Vietnam. |

This might be state specific, but I had to file a CORI request with the Mass criminal records board. Google CORI and your state, print out the request form, sign it in front of a notary, mail it off with a $25 check and you'll get your report back in under 2 weeks.
But, if you're not planning to work for Hess, you may not need it. However, having it wouldn't hurt... |

Thanks all for the help. That clears up a lot of worry (not that I have a record or anything!). And no, I'm not copying previous posts Just an ignoramous when it comes to teaching and living in Taiwan!
Yes, by the way, I did learn about the criminal record check from Hess (they claim on their website that the ROC requires it for all foreigners, but since they didn't seem to show much interest in hiring me, they never gave me a form. |

I must retract what I'd said then, thought twice about it, and made a mistake. It just appeared to be suspicious. As for the background check, you needn't worry about it, 'if you come from the states.' It took me about two minutes. Yet you need some kind of form, or employer employer requesting this.
Don't worry about HESS, in my opinion. |

Again, thanks. Remember I'm writing from Japan, know nothing, and have two months before going to Taipei so I'm quite nervous. Of course I know there's no official US embassy there! At least I know that much. hee hee
