To make a long story short, I have been dealing with Global Health (www.globalhealthcover.com) out of New Zealand to get health insurance for me and for my wife...

We opted to go with this company, as we did not want to sign up for national health insurance in Japan, as it will become extremely expensive after our first year of living here (plus, the benefits don't really seem all that wonderful either).

The reason why I abruptly ended my policy with Global (after only about 2 weeks), is because they told me that my premiums would cover both me and my wife, but did not make mention of the fact that we would be paying double (as two seperate individuals) as opposed to a "family" plan... And this was just waaaay too much money than what we are willing to spend.

I need some quick, serious advice about where I should look in terms of a private health insurance company that can insure both of us for a reasonable price. I don't care whether it's a Japanese company or foreign company. The only relevant details are, that I am 28, my wife is 30, we are both Canadian and in good health (don't smoke) or have any other conditions to prevent us from getting a policy.

Again, I don't think national health insurance is a valid option, as we plan to stay in Japan for several years, and even if our first year is cheap, it will skyrocket after that, and from what I've read (www.japanfile.com) it may be VERY difficult to cancel national health once we've signed up.

P.S. Global's price would have been: $1376 USD per year.... (which some people may disagree with me, but I thought was pretty steep)!...

P.P.S. Our school offers a policy, but it's complete shi te... It's also expensive (it includes pension that we'll never see) and most of the staff don't subscribe to it...

I don't know anything about private Japanese health insurance plans. Here are two web sites that may be helpful in getting you started. A lot is info you already know.
