Hello everyone,

I am currently teaching English in Taiwan and I'm thinking about making the move to Japan sometime later this year.

I'm not sure I like the idea of just showing up in the country with no job, although I did that in Taiwan, Japan just seems too expensive, it makes me nervous. So, what I'm thinking of doing is applying to chain schools and getting my start in Japan that way.

My question is; can I apply to Japanese chain schools from inside Taiwan, and if so, how would the hiring process be orchestrated?

I know many Japanese chain schools do both telephone and in-person interviews, I wonder how they would go about interviewing me? Do any of the 'big four' have offices in Taipei? I know GEOS has brances in Taiwan, but they are for teaching Taiwanese students, not for recruiting in Japan.

What do you guys think? Would it be easier for me to get a job with a Japanese chain from Canada or Taiwan? It seems to me that, geographically speaking, it would be easier to get the ball rolling from Taiwan. But maybe the schools don't have any recruiting apparatus in place inside Taiwan and it would actually be easier from North America.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

fich

Why don't you send them an email and ask them directly?

Yeah, could do, could do.

But, what I was thinking was maybe this is a really simple question and could be answered in two seconds by someone with experience.

Maybe Japanese chain schools only recruit from English speaking countries and I would therefore be unable to apply from Taiwan. I have no idea, but I was hoping someone of this forum might know. A little gem like that could save me hours in emails. Otherwise I would have to email NOVA and GEOS and AEON and ECC and Westgate and all the other schools that I don't know about. Maybe none of these schools recruits from Taiwan and maybe someone on this forum is aware of that fact. That's why is posted here first.

OK, anyhow, so if anyone does know anything about this and can help me out that would be great.

Thanks a bunch,

fich

Yes, it can be expensive in Japan, costing you about US$4000-5000 for a couple of months, which is what it is likely to take before you get hired and land a first paycheck. A lot depends on the time of year, too.

Not really. The big four hire almost exclusively outside of Japan by face-to-face interviews in native English speaking countries only. If you are in Japan, you might drop by their main headquarters and see if they are desperate enough to take a chance on you without their cattle call recruitment, otherwise you will be forced to interview on their time and in their selected locations.

Sure you can apply, but as I wrote above, unless you are in a NES country for the interviews, you will have to make certain they will interview you in Japan.

No. Look at their web sites.
NOVA: Boson, Chicago, San Francisco, Toronto, London, Paris, Brisbane, Melbourne, Tokyo, Osaka
ECC: Auckland, Melbourne, Sydney, London, Ireland, Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Chicago, NYC, Washington DC, Atlanta, Houston, Miami, L.A., Nagoya, Osaka, Tokyo
AEON: Portland, Honolulu, San Francisco, Denver, L.A., Chicago, London, Atlanta, NYC, Halifax, Vancouver, Toronto, Sydney
GEOS: Vancouver, Tokyo (listed as their hiring offices for N. America, Oceana, and Europe; NO interviews in Japan)

When are you planning to come here? Scour the ads, call in advance, fax or mail a resume and cover letter, and let them know when you will be here. Line up a temporary cell phone, and do your interviewing (and some further job hunting) while you are here, but expect it to take more than a week or two.

Good luck.
