JUst trying to find out which country is harder to find full-time gigs as you get older out of the two? In other words - which one discriminates against your age more?

Honestly, they're both bad. But from my limited experience I would have to say Japan is definately worse. You would be automatically excluded from many jobs just by age alone, where in Taiwan you'd at least be given an "airing" I could say. I bet many others have an opinion on this too?

I was 45 when I got my job in Taiwan - no problem on the age front - but I am not sure how old you are.

The previous poster is probably right - Japan does have the notion of a 23-year-old blond and blue teacher.

I'm a tad younger than you Ted but have friends in Japan who tell me of age-related horror stories for people with just a BA/BS or similar. Of course, advanced degrees and experience help everywhere.

I agree with taiwiener.

It certainly makes a difference as to what kind of job you apply for. Few people are going to accept a 55-year-old man applying to teach kindergartem - the energy level just isn't going to be there. But - just fine for a college or university position where age and experience the ability to counsel your students are considered assets.

Yes - a graduate degree and experience make a huge difference - as they do in every occupation.
