Hi Martin,
Still haven't got my diving permit (maybe I should stick that on my list of resolutions?? ) but I have snorkelled around the Islas de Rosario archipelago off the coast of Cartagena. Having spent a bit of time on the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, I was a little disappointed, but it was still nice, and I did see some fish I'd never seen before.
Diving is also good in the Pacific, specifically around an island called Gorgona, which Colombians say is their version of the Galapagos. The currents there are quite strong, so make sure you have a good guide.
Try Googling Poor But Happy for apartments in Cartagena, there's often apartments on there for rent, but they are at gringo prices.
And have a great time! Cartagena is wonderful!
