There's a goat outside my window that's been tied up for 3 days now ... he's been bleating so much he's sounding more like a pterodactyl on 60 iki-bins a day ...

I suppose it's just another one of those festive sounds that gets you in the mood for celebrating ... don't get me wrong ... it beats Slade anyday ...

Can't imagine that the goat is celebrating.

But it's getting 'Slayed' anyway...

I didn't realise anyone remembered what a pterodactyl sounds like!

The pterodactyl outside my window my now sounds more like a clock-work parrot whose batteries are seriously fading ...

At this rate he could die overnight ... cheating his owner out of the chance of butchering him ...

Any other festive sights and sounds of the approaching Bayram to get one in the mood for celebrating ...

A couple of nights ago a shepherd with about 30 sheep walked up my street. I remembered why Turkey wasn't European.

In my first Kurbavn Bayram in Turkey, I had the surreal experience of seeing an entire apartment block with a sheep on each balcony, bleating at each other.

For the first time in the 13 years I've lived here, Izmir seems to be denuded of sheep at Bayram. I saw some gathered in a parking lot in the outer suburbs but otherwise see no evidence of Kurban plans afoot.

Tonight there was a mass exodus by road to Cesme etc (and presumably to other destinations, in different directions). I probably won't be here to see if my neighbours continue the practice. I've heard all seats on buses to Ayvalik until Monday are sold out, so maybe I'll be here after all. [I would have booked but the lise couldn't tell me if I was teaching in the afternoon or not. I wasn't but....] Expletives deleted!!!!

Well that's that for the goat ... after some savage hacking this morning ... he's bleating no more ...

One last burp from the belly of he that consumes him and he'll be gone ...

I took the car out to watch the butchering this morning ... there's some pleasant driving to be had while people are busy killing and slicing up animals on the dusty patches in front of their homes ... the roads are quite deserted ... it's enough to put one in the festive mood ...

Turkey should be kept out merely because of this delightful tradition.

In the beginning there was absolutely nothing, but nothing implies something, just as up implies down and sweet implies sour, as man implies woman and drunk implies sober and happy implies sad. I have to tell you this, friends and neighbours, but we are teensy-weensy implications in an enormous implication. If you don't like it here, why don't you go back to where you came from?

After seeing the sea red on the news this evening, and numerous people breaking the law by killing the animals themselves, does anyone think that in 20 or 30 years there may come a time when a sheep can be sacrificed on liv TV on behalf of all Turksih Muslims, and eveyone that would have bought an animal in days of yore would instead donate money either personally to poor people they know (i.e the people that they are now giving bits of sheep to) or to a Turkish charity sponsoring Education or the like in the poorer parts of the country.

Forgive me, but I'm rather ignorant about the Koran and am not sure why this part of it (and the Old Testament) is acted upon above all other parts. that's a genuine query.

Also forgive me, I have just had the crppiest of all New Year's, having been stuck at someone's house with a raging temperature and my lift back being completely oblivious due to frantic card playing. Also, no one said Mutlu Yillar, rather, they just winked at the kids and carried on playing cards. I really pray that Bayram doesn't fall on NY'sE again in my lifetime as it's really a huge amount of time to spend with the same people, lovely as they are. I guess my family does a similar thing at Christmas but at least we can go and have a sleep, or get rather drunk.

The goat has gone back to where he came from ... well is en-route any how .. currently dispersed in sewage systems and rubbish tips ... shortly to be dropped from birds stomachs ...

Which brings us to more Kilgore scientific enquiry -

Question: What is the white stuff in bird poop?

Answer: That is bird poop, too.

anything that involves torture of animals done for humans' amusement is barbaric.

so, Doctor sir, it doesn't matter where i choose to live, i would speak up about whatever the natives do that involve this type of behaviour. It doesn't mean I should to leave the country.
