Posted: Thu Jan 11, 2007 6:24 pm Post subject: Teaching at Summer Camps.... |
|
|
I know this has been posted about before, but after searching past threads and other places on the internet I still can't find what I need.
I'm currently teaching in Prague, and I'm wanting to do a summer camp this summer during the slow months here in Prague (july-august).
Unfortunately, money is the biggest priority in selecting a camp right now, and so I'm looking for the camp that would pay the most. That could be ANYWHERE in the world. I know Korea is supposed to pay the best, but would it be possible for me to find a camp that would help with airfare? Also, what about opportunities in Japan? Or the UK?
Any advice on where to start looking? Has anyone on here taught any of these camps before? I know a lot of camps don't post job offers until around April or May, but I was hoping to go ahead and start making plans.
Thanks so much! |

Unless you are already in Japan with a proper visa, or can find a rare exchange opportunity through a university in your home country, there aren't really any such opportunities in Japan. |

Why do you keep posting that? Last time I posted a link that was advertising for a summer camp at an American school. It is not an ESL camp but it is a camp.
As for Korean, you might be able to work 7 weeks where I am currently doing a camp. The pay would be about $4700 for 7 weeks. Your ticket here would probably be around $1500 and all the food is covered. You could head back to Europe with $2000 still in your pocket. |

That's not too bad. So it's pretty much impossible to find a camp in Korea that will help you with airfare?
But 2,000 left over isn't bad at all. I wouldn't make that much extra here in Prague.
I'm wondering if I should look more at camps in the UK or Europe though... just because the travel costs would be A LOT less to get there. Any thoughts? |

moosickboy1, I don't knoow of many camps in Europe and you would probably only earn 1000 Euros a month. If you stayed on campus and didn't go out you could technically save $3000 US at the camp where I work. The ticket should be $1700 at the most. |

If you have to fly to a different country in order to do the camp, you will probably be able to only save a bit since airfare, especially in summer is expensive.
If I were to do a camp in summer, I would do it more for the experience.
I-ve seen a few posts on TEFL.com and here at Dave-s. Put "camp" in the search function and jobs will come up. |

That is really a big generalization. If you were flying from Taiwan or Japan to Korea you would be able to save most of your camp wages. The ticket would only cost $300-$500. If I was living in Taiwan and came to Korea for a 5-7 week camp, my ticket might equal how much I would spend in food when I was normally working. Meaning that since most camps in Korea give you free meals you would about break even flight ticket versus paying for your own meals where you live.
On the other hand if you fly from South America to Korea, then you would have a large portion of your salary rapped up in the cost of the plane ticket. Still if you could come to Korea for a 7 week camp you would return with $2000. $1000 a month is twice what you are earning naturegirl321(If I remember correctly.) Anyways there is a 7 week camp that pays $5000 US. I imagine that the plane ticket would be $2000 at the most. Leave $1000 for expenses while in Korea to be safe. You would still have $2000 left over. |

not since I left Piura, now in Lima, the wages are much higher. 500 USD is simply an average for teachers in Peru. Plus I'm able to work two teaching jobs and writing. However, the problem would be the timing. Here summer runs from Dec to Feb. However, if you know of anything during that time, |

Korea has winter camps. I am working at TLBU Winter Camp. You should check it out next Dec. 26-Feb 12. The pay for seven weeks is $5000 US. |

Umm, because it's as true as I know. Yours is practically the only example of a summer camp that meets the OP's requirements.
Most don't hire outside Japan, AFAIK. If you know differently, please by all means list the plethora that do. One name is helpful, of course, but you act as if there are a zillion. Of the ones I see advertised, they all require that applicants be in Japan and have a valid visa already. |

I did not say that there are a zillion. I am just saying that I know of one and I have not even really looked for one. You act like none exist. |
