I have been told by several Chinese teachers at several Chinese universities that most of the universities do in fact provide health insurance for their Chinese teachers -- including 80% of Major medical. The only thing they don't cover are some prescriptions.
I guess they don't generally give it to us because they figure they are paying us the higher salaries instead, and they don't want to risk a major investment in someone who probably won't be around that long.
I'm actually surprised they don't offer it. Medical expenses are relatively cheap in China (except in Beijing and Shanghai). Even a big operation is only equivalent to a few years' pay, and they'd only end up paying for something in a small minority of cases. It would go a long way to making them more competitive with Japan and Korea for better teachers if they offered it. What they'd stand to gain is much bigger than what they'd stand to lose.
But has anyone worked at/come across a Chinese university that Does provide major medical to FT's? I'm pretty sure there's no federal Chinese regulation Against them doing so -- it's just not part of the federally recommended benefits package. Thanks .... Mep |
