I've been offered a placement in TungKang. (As usual, there are several pinyin variations). It's on the south-west coast, just south of Kaohsiung.
I haven't found a lot of information about the place. Has anyone been there? What's it like? |

It is a small fishing town. FongGang is another name that is more commonly used. They have a boat burning festival every 3 years. Apart from that you'd be better off looking into work in Kaohsiung if you want to live in the south. |

Why do you suggest I work in Kaohsiung? It's a big city from what I've heard.
Your "small fishing town" description sounds idyllic. TungGang/FongGang looks close enough to access whenever I need. But that's my assumption - tell me more. |

Well what I took away from it was that it is a very small, very non-western town. If thats what you're looking for then more power to you. Although it is a fishing town, there is no swimming on the beaches there, due to pollution or shipping lanes, or the giant refineries near by is your choice.
Kaohsiung is a fairly modern, more westernized city with pretty much all the amenities of a western city. The nice this is that the location of Kaohsiung allows you to easily get out of the city on the weekend and travel to a number of different places with little travel time involved. In less than 2 hrs you can get to Tainan, PingDung, FongGang, Maolin National Park, Kenting, etc., etc..
Not to mention that there is a much larger ex-pat community in Kaohsiung and thus it would be easier to make some friends who come from home. Not that there is anything wrong with Taiwanese friends, but sometimes you just need a break and want to speak fluent English with some folks from back home!
Hope that helps! |

I don't mean to butt in, but are you definitely talking about the same place? I know there can be many ways to spell the same word, but Tung is rarely (if ever) the same word as Fong. Fong could be spelt fung or feng and tung could be teng, tong or dong, but fong being the same word as tung seems unlikely to me.
Just thought I'd throw that in. |

Yep. Two different places. Tong Gung (spell it how you like) is a fishing village on the west coast south of Kaohsiung. Fong Gung is a different town on the way down to Kenting, and is the place where you turn East to go to Taidong. It's always busy with people stopping for lunch during their drives. |

Idyllic and small town Taiwan are very often contradictions in terms. There are some nice places, but small towns in Taiwan are not what you are used to in the west. I don't recommend smaller centers to those who've never been to Taiwan. |

My bad...I just assumed with the directions given "south-west of Kaohsiung" that it could be an "interesting" chinglish variation on FongGang. |
