I do believe Ive bagged a job in Vsetin. Sounds like a lovely place, though quite small. Recently, I taught in Puebla, Mexico and then in Shanghai, China, so a small town in the mountains with a population of 35,000, attracts me rather than repulses me. What can you all tell me about small town life in the Czech Republic? I lived in Rosenheim Germany for 5 years, which is the same size as Vsetin and one hour south of Munich, close to the Alps. I found that the appeal of RO, was in its natural setting. Ive looked at many pictures of Vsetin and it does seem to hold the same natural charms, that RO possessed. There will be hiking and biking in the spring, summer, and autumn months and hopefully snow, in winter. Apparently, there is a cozy pub which boasts a fireplace, where all of the teachers gather, weekly, to have a few beers. The salary is a bit low, 750US (clear), but an apartment is provided and healthcare, as well. What do you think, ESL forum members? Is this a go?" |

I'm trying to place Vsetin in my mind, but without being familiar with the town itself, my general advice would be to check on travel connections (is there a major train line? or will you have to bus yourself out when you want to travel?). Secondly, in a small town you are much more likely to need functional Czech for your daily stuff. Better start cramming!
So far this winter, no significant snow. But, hey, I was in Innsbruck last week and they haven't got any either. We hope it's a freak weather pattern....
I live in a small town in the Czech Rep at least six months every year. I find it entirely pleasant - though I do get out a couple of times every week, and am lucky to be on the main train line Prague - Ceske Budejovice - Vienna - Salzburg - Innsbruck and Prague - Venice....and etc. |

The place is OK. Just ot the north are some interesting towns - Val. Mezirici, Stramberk and Roznov. The place isn't really in the mountains - big hills more like. It's a bit out the way - i.e. not on any main transport routes. Give it a blast! |
