|
|
Hi all...
Well, I've accepted a position with Amity/AEON and I'll be leaving for Japan in April...since I've gotten notice of this, I started reseaching things and one thing that "concerns" me is the size of Amity apartments. Now I can do small, I expect small, but I read on Amity's website that their apartment size is 100 sq. ft.!!! Total
That sounds like a really small box (smaller than my living room in a one bedroom apt)...so my question is could someone give me the low down on what to REALLY expect?? What are the apartments really like?? And how comfortable is it to live in?? Give it to me raw...I just want nothing to surprise me when I get there...and I want my mother to understand that she can't load me up with a bunch of bullsh*t when I'm packing to leave...lol!
Please and thanks!!

You will cry. Then you will laugh. Then you will cry. You will get used to it.
From the information on these boards, it seems like you'll be stuck with the apartment for the term of your contract. You will have reduced rent, and if you want to move, you must continue to pay the rent for the apartment, basically insuring that you will stay at the apartment, or change jobs.
Once you adjust, you will be fine, but at first, you're going to cry. |

I have never worked for Aeon/Amity. I don't cry. Good luck. |

My friend works for them and has a nice apartment. He has a bonus in that it is rent free. But he told me that it was unusual not to have to pay rent for this company. Like what was said above you at least will get reduced rent. Which in itself isn't too bad. |

Look on the bright side:
it will take 10-15 mins to clean your apt.
you won't lose anything
if you're eating breakfast and you forgot a spoon or your milk, you can reach back and get it without getting up.
never far to go to get your phone
I remember the first time I saw my apt here, I walked around trying to find the "other" room. I thought, where could they be hiding it? I am not kidding. Then it dawned on me that this was it... You will get used to it.

He's not joking. You can get a beer from the fridge without actually moving your legs. |

This can depend a little bit on where you are. I work for AEON but I am in a smaller town so there is a bit more room. When I first saw my apartment I was actually pleasantly surprised. Sure it is only one room but I have the space for a couch and a coffee table as well as the fitted table and desk and my bed is not a loft. I also have loads of storage space. But if you are going to be in Tokyo or Osaka then I'm afraid you may not be so lucky. Either way, you'll get used to it, but like you said, you don't want too much with you to begin with, you'll want to get things here.

It's considered normal in Japan for young people in their first job to live in such a small apartment, if they aren't still living with their parents. Many companys even have dormitories with rooms smaller than that. |

My husband and I HAD to move to a bigger place b/c we were at each others throats---literally---when we got angry at each other in our last place. The only room we had to get away from each other was the toilet, and going in there all the time can get old and stinky. With that said, almost all of the apartments I have been to in Japan are tiny (except for the super expensive ones and the ones in the country) You should be ok in the company apartment and eventually you can move out if you want, but for one person it will be fine. You can always move to the country, like me, if you want more space! |

Have you even looked at the floor plan for the AEON apartments?
http://www.aeonet.com/japan/apartment.html
There may be some variation, of course, from city to city, but bear in mind that with AEON, you get a very good price. The rent is capped at about 42,000 yen, so unless you go to work for JET and get a place rent-free, or live in the countryside by yourself, or share rent in the suburbs with someone, you can't really get a better deal financially.
Sadly, even if you choose AEON and a non-AEON apartment, you have to pay for the AEON apartment. |

I think Glenski has it here, that's the main point of this all. If you want to be able to get out of the lease or your apartment without continuing to pay for it after working for the company for a little while and still keep your job then you have to go with ECC, Geos, or Nova if you are looking at the bigger Eikawas. If you work for a company like Aeon or it's counterpart Aeon Amity then you are stuck with that apartment and rent, and yes it's true if you finish your contract and there happens to be a newbie coming in to your branch and your branch manager okays it they might let you out of the lease without continuing to pay for the apartment, but this is iffy, this is not a guarantee. This all being said some people come to Japan only for a year or two and having a company apartment is very convenient to have being that you will spend loads of money getting your own apartment. As far as how small the apartment is, well it's just like college, when you get to your dorm room your freshman year it's a bit scary, you couldn't think about actually living comfortably in this place and it's bit closterphobic but after a month or two it's home and it actually becomes bigger in your own mind.

I work for Aeon in Kansai, and with the exception of the kitchen area, my apartment is the perfect size. It's a little tight but I think it's perfect for signle occupancy. |
