Being totally new to China and ESL teaching I am seeking some advice.

A friend and I have been offered a teaching position in Kaili City, Guizhou Province. We are leaning towards this position for a number of reasons, namely:
- The contract is only for 4 months, so if we decided teaching is not for us, then it will be easy to stick it out.
- They have offered us what seems to be quite a good package 6000 RMB per month (incl. accommodation. Our airfare reimbursement of 1000 RMB per month is included in that salary also). Weekends and evenings off.
- A more rural setting will allow us to really get a feel for China and the culture. We are not looking for long-term careers in ESL teaching (however if we love it then are open minded!), and are more seeking to experience China.

Our main concern is that there have been no previous FT's at this school (Kaili Middle School) before us. Will this be an issue as neither of us have had any previous ESL teaching?

Also, the school has requested we arrive on an L visa and they will change it to an F visa upon arrival. Is this normal practice?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Kaili is a great place to spend a few months - off the beaten path, yet known to the intrepid backpackers that rough it in China (not that you will have a hard time). It's noted for its local nationality with its unique lifestyle that sets them apart from the Hans in Guiyang.
In summer you will appreciate the relative balminess that's not like the sticky heat in Guangxi or Guangdong.
I would expect locals to be curious towards foreigners and a lot friendlier than city residents.

I am only sceptical about the visa issue; they ought to send you an invitation so that you can apply for an 'F' visa back home. Maybe they will get an 'F' visa from the local P.S.B. - but maybe they won't.
That remains a mystery until you find out for yourself...
