Ok I just made up the word. But maybe this is a serious issue.

I guess we should come up with a defintion of it. Obviosly it's someone who spends too much time here.
But what is too much time? Is it someone who has made over 500 posts(Roger you need help) Is it someone who logs on at least once a day(I'm guilty) Is it someone who thinks at some point during the day"I can't wait to get home and check out what's going on down the cafe"
Sad I know but then most addictions are.
Dave Sperling has alot to answer to.
Has he thought about setting up a DA( Daveaholics Anonymous)?
What would the treatment be?

Good one!

I'm not sure I want to relate to people face to face anymore. Is that a problem? Laughing

Tell me about your childhood. (I have an MA in Psychology)

Hello, my name is Foster and I am a Daveaholic.
I check about 5 times a day from work and then get regular email updates, which of course I check out as soon as I get them.
I need help. Embarassed Embarassed

Why is it so addicting? Are the people that interesting?? Arethe topics that enthralling? WHAT IS IT???

<stepping over toes, almost tripping on own feet> Excuse me, excuse me, sorry about your toes... Yes, I know I'm late, but I'm a Davehead too. I've tried to quit, but I can't take those DaveyJones any more. I NEED my daily fix. <sits down shaking and sweating profusely>

Guilty your honour. I too need help and my wife is not happy that this site exists, despite my protests of its merits. Embarassed

I once told her how many posts I had, big mistake. She said "is that something to be proud of"?

The 12 Steps to Recovery from Davesaholicism:

1) I will have a cup of coffee in the morning and read my newspaper like I used to, before Dave's ESL Cafe took over my life.

2) I will eat breakfast with a knife and fork and not with one hand typing.

3) I will get dressed before noon.

4) I will make an attempt to clean the house, wash clothes, and plan dinner before even thinking of logging in to Dave's.

5) I will sit down and write a letter to those unfortunate few friends and family that are not members of Dave's.

6) I will call someone on the phone who I cannot contact via private messaging on Dave's.

7) I will read a book...if I still remember how.

8) I will listen to those around me and their needs and stop telling them to turn the TV down so I can concentrate on replying to posts on Dave's.

9) I will not be tempted during TV commercials to check for new posts on Dave's.

10) I will try and get out of the house at least once a week, whether it is necessary or not.

11) I will remember that my bank is not forgiving if I forget to balance my checkbook because I was too busy on Dave's.

12) Last, but not least, I will remember that I must go to bed sometime...and Dave's ESL Cafe will always be there tomorrow!

Oh, but it is something to be proud of!!! What's wrong with having a few guilty pleasures in life??

OK, now I'm off to put some of Capergirl's steps into action. First things first--time to change out of my pajamas and--gulp!!--turn off my computer!

I can't stop your honor. Its like an itch inside my veins. I try to scratch it but is stays there. It torments me night and day. I can't even enjoy vacations anymore. I sometimes read other forums when there isn't much happening on Dave's but I never post on them. I always come back. I even get other people to try it. Help me!

See...I taught 3 classes and rushed back to my little desk and laptop to check to see what is happening! AURGH....

Gordon, sorry your wife doesn;t understand the addiction of Dave's. You could remind her that there are worse -oholics to be (alcoholic, workaholic, sexaholic, etc...)

Of all the addictions out there, this may be the least damaging. (I hope)

Look, it's not like it's a problem or anything. I mean, I can totally handle it. It's strictly recreational. And social -- everybody does it. I don't need any 12-step/two-step/sidestep program or anything. That's for the serious, hardcore addicts. I am completely in control and can quit anytime I want to.

I just don't want to right now.

I quit posting a while back. I just look in now and again, honest. If i had to, I could stop posting any time, any time.

That sounded a bit pretentious to me.

I'm not sure if I'm a Davaholic or no. Yeah, with my post count I have no credibility, but I knew about this site for 2 years before checking it out even once. Dave just has a captive audience with me; this site (and others) are the fastest, most effective, and only means of keeping in touch with kindred spirits, and talking shop with people who understand what I'm saying (I'm not talking about language barrier so much as EFLing is best understood if experienced.)

If I can give it up when I leave Jiangxi, then I'll know. Very Happy
