|
|
I have taught english for 10 years in China, Korea, Russia, India, Japan and Saudi Arabia. I did universities, Microsoft, Intel, IBM, etc-
i know what I am doing and I hoped a job with the Royal Saudi Navy would be some amazzing awesome gig with big money and lots of professionalism-
NOT
The simple fact about the RSNF TINs (Royal Saudi Naval Forces Technical Institute for Naval Studies) is absolutley the worst job and easiest job I have ever had- period.
personally, I like Saudi- hate TINS
Short Version- this job is glorified babysitting, not teaching english- pays well for a psycholgiclaly destablizing experience- only do this if you desperately need money
Medium Version- as long as you like bad rules, doing things the wrong way, doing things to make the students happy regardless of the teaching concept all just for a steady paycheck, then this is job is for you
Pros: if you need money, this is an easy way to do this as the school is desperate
they always pay on time
$2600 USD a month, tax free
provide free rent
good free, meals
a steady paycheck
plus longs vacations for Haj and Ramamdan
great stepping stone to other KSA jobs
gurateed renewal and 5% salary increase every year
Cons:
this is the lowest paying military gig in Saudi (@ 50% of other military jobs in KSA) and only low/average as compared to otehr school salaries
they lie about everything, the administration is totally disorganized/inept (take your pick)
they have been making the same mistakes and getting worse for the past 10 years- there are peopel who have been here for 10 years, and they know the problems
(most, not all, most) of the studetnts are really really bad (bad motivation, low skill level, physically, verbally agrressive, etc)- the idea from the Saudi Prince here is to give low jobs to Saudis to prevetn them from joining terrorist groups- so you can imagine the caliber of students which are attracted here
the students are not naval officer cadets, they are NCO/regular sailors = they real dont carw about much, english is not a prirotity for them
they pass to the next test leve even after failing 3 exams in a row-
and we spend 14 -17 days doing over 150 pages for new material when many of the cadets couldn't handle book 4, they shove them all the way up to book 17
the schedule fluctuates from 5 hours/days a week to 7 hours/6 days a week- usually the later, at the whim of the high ranking officers
you won't be paid for the 1ist 60 days as you get a bank account, other stuff
they never tell you about the actual vacation dates until the day before = you wont be able to schdule any flying unless you take a chance
you really need a car to get aroudn here = higher cost
the general apathy about the place is devesating- only the old/those who can't get jobs anywhere esle seem to stay here
i have seen some great teachers come in here, try their best for a month or two, only to be slowly smothered into a zombie state of Pavlovian trained monkey-ism waiting for the Bell to end the class
Long version- email me, I'll tell ya the specifics

Yeh, that's it. Military jobs aren't for everyone. But for some of us they're a godsend. Good pay and conditions for an easy job. Your only duty is to turn up. No lesson observations, no lesson plans, no need to bother with inane questions about grammar etc. For guys like me it's tailor made. I couldn't survive anywhere else. I'm now 100% unemployable outside of my current gig. It's the end of my tefl 'career' as I know it, and I feel fine.
What's your next move chuck? |

yes Chuckd .. tis the soundtrack to most (all?) teaching jobs in the middle east. Only a teacher in advanced psychosis would pretend theres anything really happening in the classroom. When i leave an arab country, i am happy to hear my students speak Arabic with an irish accent. Then I know i have achieved something |

Is this news? We all know about TINS. Many of us got our start there. We have posted about TINS left, right and center. TINS is what it is. Why didn't you know before you signed up? If you did know, shut your pie-hole.
I note you liked the meals, I guess they changed the food then. |

child please! don't sit there and post for everyone on the board. don't presume to use the phrase, "we have ...blah...blah..blah...."
did it ever occur to you that new people on the board haven't heard about it?
you sure haven't told anyone any valid information. you're too busy posting bibble babble
tell us all about the place you work. do you use long or short sweeps when you push the broom?
and don't come on this board criticizing posters who post good information about a place they work
now then, be a good fellow, take my advice and be the better boy for it! |

i love these threads .. someone makes an observation .. and before you know it, hair-pulling and insults take hold. I guess tis the nature of Saudi - someone Farted in the kitchen and noone feels like eating anymore .. which is fair enough .. |

As a five-year survivor of TINS, I know a bit about it. They pay on time. They have a weird vacation schedule. They mistreat the sailors.
OK, it is a good place to start. It is remarkable anyone could go there and not know of the conditions. They are posted all over this and other sites. |

So the guy didn't bother to see how much money the contract said he was earning and waited until his first pay check to be disappointed?
And where in the world is the military organized and professional and awesome in any respect other than firepower? |
