|

Moved from Shanghai to NanChang July 31. Contract with previous employer completed on July 31. New university applys for Z visa multi-entry in JiangXi province. FAO is told no Z multi-entry for international teachers are allowed in JiangXi provience. (the story given to the FAO by the visa person in NanChang is that there were "some" problems with a backpacker using a Z multi-entry illegally?) is this a valid story? I had no problem having my FAO in Shanghai obtain a Z multi-entry. anyone else have similar experiences?
I went home for a couple weeks late August with the new single entry Z. now, of course, I need another visa. the FAO was very "unhappy" that I was "unhappy" with a single entry. I do travel inside China but I like the ability of being able to go to other countires that are close-by - i.e. Vietnam, Japan, etc. I've always had a multi-entry Z.
any other people in "out laying" areas have a similar problem in the last month or so? Beijing? Shanghai? |

We just had our PSB lecture (I'm in Shanghai) and this subject was much discussed. In addition, the strident police drone who lectured at us actually gave me her copy of The Blue Book when I requested one. That's Law of the People's Republic of China on Entry and Exit of Aliens- a fine read if you're autistic or drunk.
According to all these sources, the open-ended multiple-entry Z visa is becoming almost impossible to obtain unless you are a businessperson who can show a need to make frequent business trips out of China. Others will be routed into a single-reentry permit good for 3 months or a double-reentry permit good for 6 months. This seems to be a national, not local, policy now.
Doesn't seem to be a big deal. Using the 6-month versions you can re-enter 4 times a year. How many trips out can you afford?

Sounds very bad! Give the authorities a minimum of credit though - some backpackers do abuse their "rights". Getting a one-year multiple-entry visa can be a temptation for them to move on to greener pastures or simply to traipse around the country.
The solution for bona fide teachers might be to apply for shorter periods, leave China or the mainland (for Hong Kong, for example) at the end of their first stint, then return (and see if a simple extension, if possible back-dated to the time when the old one expired) is possible?
I know they can back-date a visa if they want; what I am not certain is whether they can extend a work visa without requiring you to undergo the costly medical exam again!
Another option might be to free your employer from the extra costs for a MULTIPLE ENTRY visa; ask them to foot the bill for a single-entry, one-year visa, and offer to pay for the difference to a multiple-entry one (should set you back about 600 to 1000 RMB a year). |

okay, thanks everyone. seems as this is country wide. yes, I paid the extra for the multi after my previous university paid for the single. just give me a sense of freedom, and the ability to zip across the border for a long weekend. but the multi for teachers seems to be a thing of the past, as in last fall. seems a bit of a situation for my school thought as all of us now have single entry which we used in August, now we need new ones to use over the Winter break, and then again for summer. multi was just so nice.
thanks for the replys. |
