Hi folks,
I am a 20 year old American undergraduate student hoping to teach English abroad over my summer break between May and August. I have been reading the forums on eslcafe for a while and have found that there are stark differences in seasonal job availability between countries. For instance, I read summer is the peak season in Vietnam while it a black hole in Romania.
It is very difficult to understand where the best opportunities are. I hope that some of you who researched or experienced this can give me a hand.
I don't know whether this hurt my cause; I am a BS engineering major. I don't have any esl teaching experience, however I have been employed as a tutor for, among other things, English writing.
I should say I prefer a big, interesting city in a safe country with loose/Western morals and a sizable population of young expats. I'm not looking to get rich, but it is important for me to break even with airfare and living expenses and to avoid imprisonment.
Thanks a lot. |

Hello,
Summer is a great time for work in Vietnam as a lots of schools have summer programmes running, usually between mid-May to mid-August. I am probably going to be heading out myself for a summr placement at one of the schools this year.
The only thing I would say is that some of the well known schools such as Language Link and Apollo do require a basic TEFL qualification. I think this is more government regulations then anything else. That being said, there's no harm in sending your CV in and seeing what happens. As I said summer is certainly a good time to be going out there on a placement, although to say its hot at that time of year is an understatement and a half.
Good luck |
