Hi!
I'm new in Mexico City, and wonderded if anyone has any insight as to how to find the art scene here, especially the younger, more underground one. I know there is one--I've run into a couple of interesting shows and fun openings--but nobody so far has given me a straight answer about how they find out about them.
I moved here in large part because I love the contemporary art coming out of this city, and I feel like I was seeing more Mexican art in NY.
Help!
Thanks,
Anna |

I think you're going to have to approach it the way you do everything here, by slowly networking. Check out any show that you hear about, and ask the people there if they know of anything else coming up.
I've got some friends who studied in art school here and they invite me to some cool contemporary shows... the problem I find is people following me around to ask how I can get them a show in Canada- I can't.
You could also try volunteering at a museum. I did my social service at one and get invited to very cool things once in a while. |

You could pick up a copy of Tiempo Libre magazine for a guide to weekly events, shows, workshops, etc. |

I am here in Merida and have established my own limited network. I was rebuffed once or twice when I noticed that one of the local hot shot freelance photographers had a Tshirt that screamed I am a photographer and tried to strike up a conversation with him.
But other than that walking into the galleries, striking up a conversation, asking if anyone was interested in seeing my work, jawboning with the gallery owners, some of whom were artists themselves and hitting the openings.
I have visited two artist`s studio, one a portrait painter whose work is accomplished but not my taste, on account of a personal invite. He was a friend of a MXan friend and others had pointed him out.
Then there is a sculpture foundry outside the city that is rented by the month and people have steered me in that direction and hope to pay a visit. I am sure that the owner would be more than happy to show me her place if she thinks I am serious about renting her foundry.
Most artists are more than happy to show you their studios and work in the prospect of making a sale. Even if you are not, let them think you are interested. |

Has anyone at all seen any theatre in DF? I'll be moving there in February, and this is part of the reason I want to live there...people have told me there's an active community.
