				| This is my quandary....
I'm renewing my visa soon, I've got all my papers from my employer etc. but I'm also leaving Japan within a month of the extention. If I get a reentry permit and if (though it's unlikely) I get issued with a 3-year visa, if I depart, can I still return to Japan on the visa even if it's, say, 2 years later? Is there a maximum time you can be out of the country on a reentry permit?

From what I understand, this would all be fine but I just wanted to see if anyone else had any knowledge.

At this point, I can't see myself returning to Japan anytime soon but so point closing doors if I don't have to.

				| They would ask you questions upon your return. You would have to explain why there was a such a big gap. There is a good chance they will cancel your visa, even though you have a reentry permit. | |

				| Reentry permits are granted for the lifespan of your visa (1 or 3 years in most casts) or just for a flat 3 years (for those with PR status). Reentry means reentry; come back with it before it expires. I wouldn't cut it too close, though, and (for example) come back a month or two before it expires. | |

In theory, but they are also can be canceled at the port of entry. This happened to someone I knew. Before he left his job, he had 2 years left on his visa. He went back to Canada. A year and a half later, he came back, thinking that he could look for a new job, and that he still had time left on his visa. They canceled it at the airport because he was not reentering with the same company that was a sponsor previously.

				| I think that it would be worth phoning immigration directly and finding out what the official line is.
Another question could be: Would you be able to use your Alien Registration Card if you returned before it expired?

				| About 6 years ago I left Japan for 7 months shortly after renewing my visa. I had no trouble at all coming back in again on the same visa but I can imagine Immigration having issues with a gap as long as 2 years. | |

Ooooh!! I tried! I tried! I think I searched back until Nov 2005. So close yet so far!

But from what everyone says, it sounds like it's not so simple. Not to worry though. Like I said, it was more a case of "what if.....".

LOL. Like I said, I know someone that did have his visa canceled. Looks like it's worth looking into it further, as there seems to be some conflicting information.
