I would like to know if anyone has any personal or any other reliable information on working and living in India (obviously as an ESL teacher). Is it hard to find jobs? Are the living conditions alright? Is the pay good? How and where does one look for jobs?
Would appreciate some advice or comments. Thanks..... |

The efl market in India is about as big as the one in the USA, but with less pay. The domestic teachers are considered adequate to do the job, and it has been the official language of business and government there until very recently. |

India is ummm not the cleanest place on the planet.
overcrowded extreme poverty corruption and deception
are a way of life.
why the hell would you want to work there?
I hear Kerala is good, but you will catch something for certain,
Dysentry, etc....
unless you feel hardcore about going I would pass it up and
keep looking- |

If hygiene in India is a problem, then you should stay at home as India's hygiene standards are in no way different to those in most other Third-World countries, including China.
It has a lot going for it - a cultural diversity you cannot exaggerate, foods that keep you dreaming, and a varied geography second to no other country's.
I liked touring India, but the fact is that there hardly are any TEFL jobs. One reason is that India as a former British colony has all the necessary teaching know-how as well as lots of incentives to use English in the country. |

Remember ,when talking to Indians,a sideways shake of the head means yes or no...could be tricky when seducing a local. |

hey double agent... come on. Have you been? There are usually two reactions though even if you have
LOVE
and
HATE.
I spent a year there albeit doing voluntary work and six months of that in Calcutta a festering hell hole. I loved every minute and would go back any day.
The British Council have a few centres there don't they? That might be best in terms of salary (if you are a Brit). I recently saw an ad somewhere for work in Kerala but the salary was pitiful. Granted it's cheap but that really is slave labour. Kerala by the way is very beautiful. Teacher training might be an option though.
If I could find a decent paying job there I'd be back at the drop of a hat. |
