depends on the job, could be up to 35/hr for EAP pre-sessionals
or as low as 6.50 for EFL lessons in a mill

minimum wage is about 5 an hour as a guideline

But bear in mind that teachers are typically paid per taught hour, and don't get extra for prep, marking, admin, meetings etc. 6.50 GBP ph would probably work out as less than the minimum wage one those these extras are factored in.

A full time job on the minimum wage would pay 200-240 GPB pw, assuming a 40-48 hour working week. When you see a job advertised, work out how many hours you'll need to put in to earn that amount to get some idea.

Just to help you as a guide, from a British National:

Minimum wage at age 21 plus is 5.35, rising to about 5.50 in Oct this year. A standard working week in the UK rarely goes above 37.5 hours these days, (depending on profession) meaning thats 200 BEFORE TAX for a low paid English worker. In real terms that 160-170 take home a week.

Clearly prep etc has to be taken into account for a teacher. To give you an indidcation supply teachers here are on about 100 a day, and a teacher fresh outta teacher training anywhere from 19K a year upwards.

Hope this helps.............

I assume you're referring to state schools, where the starting salary is around 19k, rising to around 30k. Private language schools pay nothing like this - you'll be lucky to earn 15k, but then you won't have the National Curriculum to follow, or OFSTED beathing down your neck.

30 per hour for a 40 hour week is about 62,400 per annum. Where can you get that teaching English?

Yes, I guessed that was what you meant! Still, it does sound good - 3 or 4 hours of private tuition at KD15 would cover the living expenses of a single person in Kuwait and he or she wouldn't have to touch their salary.
However, I've been told that Kuwait has become MUCH more expensive since 2001.

The golf was great-here we have grass! (and cold beer when you finish)
