I teach a culture class at university. I am considering rounding it off with a movie. Can anyone recommend a British movie that they feel really shows of Britain. I doubt if my students (Japanese) have ever seen anything other than the usual Hollywood fare. I am really hoping that I can widen their horizons so to speak. |

'About a Boy' would be a good choice. Funny, nothing too offensive in there, and there are also quite a few monologues as characters talk to the camera which would be good for students to understand.
Alternatively if they just want to laugh then 'Johnny English' is a hit...lots of corporeal humour in there that kids (including adult big kids) love.
'Bend it like Beckham' would also be useful, especially for stimulating class debate on gender roles. |

Try "lock, stock, and two smoking barrels " or the followup "snatch".Another couple of possibilities are "the İtalian job" or the full length feature film of "The league of gentlemen" .Then theres "The long good Friday "or "The Krays" .Pity most films in the U.K are usually violent .
On a lighter note there are old films based on much loved tv characters like "steptoe and son" "only fools and horses" and good old "Fawlty towers" you might even squeeze in a bit of "Mr Bean " . |

Michael Caine's "don't pick up the ball" is an all time classic. |

Most of my DVDs are freebies from the front of various newspapers. One of those was 'Let Him Have It' - the story of Bentley and Craig. A good language point as the crux of the story. |

That's a good one!
Also, "The Wicker Man", but how your students would react to it I have no idea. |
