To any and all who respond to my query, thank you in advance. Quite often, I am approached by professionals(doctors, dentists, Indonesian teachers, etc.) who wish to improve their childrens' or their own English skills and want to know if I am available for tutoring. Although I teach English in a school and know what a reasonable salary is, I have NO idea what rate to charge per hour as a tutor. Could anyone reading this give me an idea what to charge per hour/per lesson and any other pointers before I begin? Again, thank you and I really enjoy reading what is posted at ESLCAFE as it has helped me with my job search in the past as well as having great information to improve my teaching skills. |

Rates vary, but make sure you get paid in advance.
otherwise you will find that after a few sessions the novelty wears off and you will have organised your spare time (and budget) and for nothing. I tried doing groups, for organisations like the lions club etc, I told them that the more friends they bring along, the cheaper the hourly rate. started very enthusiastically, but numbers quickly dwindled (shopping was more important) - without advising me. I felt that to the participants, to start a course was as good as completing a course. Individual tutoring was equally unreliable. language schools get a lump sum up front, then a couple of progress payments, or all up front! Show me the money first, thats my advice. |

I don't know where you are working or how well-heeled your clientele may be, and these factors should come into your calculations. I don't know any native speaker who charges less than 100 ribu per hour for regular private tuition, while I can think of a few who charge substantially more. |
