Speaking of Latin music. What gets your toes tapping? It is a bit old now, but I still love a bit of Cara Luna by Bacilos and Mi Primer Million. Mana have some great songs. There is so much great stuff. What does it for you guys?

I love love love Lila Downs. Her mother is Mixtecan, her father Minnesotan. She her background is opera and jazz. She does traditional Mexican songs with a twist as well as oringinals that are best described as jazz-pop-latin-folk fushion. Awesome voice, great supporting musicians, fabulous listening, especially live.

There is also a Mexican band called Los de Abajo That I like. Kind of Rock-Mariachi-Ska.

I also really like trova, not excatly toe tapping, but heart soaring.

For some reason I can't really explain, northern Mexican corridos and Sinaloan banda get my toes a-movin. Tubas, trumpets, and acordions. Shocked

Almost as scary as Guy, I really like mariachi. In fact its one of the things that brought me to Latin America in the first place. Embarassed

Like Melee, I also like trova. Diego Torres is great for songs that are just so dang cheerful, and I like Julieta Venegas too. Its weird, because I can't stand most pop music in English.

Something I never admit here in Colombia, but I really can't stand Shakira. Wink

I like pretty much all salsa and merengue music, makes me just want to get up and dance. I like Juanes, especially his album "Un da normal."

Not really a fan of reggaeton, but pretty much any other Latin music.

I know what you mean. Even the name sucks. How dare they sully the name of reggae with their 'imitation hip-hop'.

I love raggaeton!

This song is great; from the Dominican Republic. It uses a combination of old and new instruments:

Esta cancion is huge in the clubs now! A dancy-Spanish language track:

Afro-Brazilian is also great to get down to, Sergio Mendes has a huge hit with his song 'Magalhena':

I enjoy Mariachis but find often their lyrics are overly corny and sad. Salsa is OK, but after listening to a few songs they all sound the same!

I love Juanes, Reik, Cumbia Kings... and reggaeton, it gets me movin'!
Another type of music that I listen to is Salsaton, a combination of Salsa and Reggaeton. It's a strange but cool combination.

The salsaton that I have is mostly remixes of La India stuff. You could, ahem, do a search on something like LimeWire to find the mixes.
There is also an amazing CD out called Rhythms Del Mundo and it has some really surprising mixes, like Coldplay, Maroon 5, and U2 songs remixed into salsa versions.

Hey I had a listen to the CD online. I've got to say I didn't really like it that much. Well it was good, I would enjoy listening to it, but I wouldn't dance to it. Too slow and cruisy.

I've recently discovered Cafe Tacuba out of Naucalpan, Mexico and La Vela Puerca from Montevideo, Uruguay. Soda Stereo from Argentina are also good from what I have heard. I also like Jorge Drexler's song Se va, se va, se fue . I also ran across a gem by an Uruguayo by the name of Daniel Viglietti. He has a wonderful little song called Me Matan Si No Trabajo.

Any recommendations?

Cafe Tacuba fans will like a Mexico City band called Los de Abajo. The catch is its hard to find their stuff in Mexico, they are on David Byrne's lable and those discs haven't been imported much.

And if you like blending of styles and quality musical talent, you should check out my favorite girl, Lila Downs. A Mixteco-Minnesotan, she's my doble paisana!
