There is one particular poster here who keeps stating that it is illegal to work in China on an "F" visa. I constantly challenge that claim as being completely false.

The official SAFEA web site should be consulted for the truth.

Let's revisit MaTroll's dubious claims.

In the thread entitled My Contract was Broken - Showdown in Changle, MaTroll states as fact that:

Quote:
A person can legally work in China on an "F" visa for 12 months or less. A Person who works in China on a "Z" visa must obtain an "Expert's Certificate" to obtain their residency permit.

Now, when challenged, MaTroll gets a hit on Google leading to the SAFEA website's Work Guide FAQ. This particular FAQ entry, written near the end of 2005, states that "Certain municipalities (Guangzhou, Shanghai, Beijing, certain east coastal areas) are able to hire teachers on a 6-month "F" visa ..."

At best we can verify from this that MaTroll's forte isn't reading comprehension. But should we even be that generous? SAFEA is an administrative organization that has advisory capacity and no legal authority to dictate visa terms and conditions, much less contractual terms for foreigh teachers. Further, SAFEA functions virtually exclusively in the realm of public educational institutions, but -- again -- in an advisory capacity. That a 2005 FAQ entry on SAFEA's website claims one may work for 6 months on an "F" visa only in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou or certain east coast areas does not make it so.

In addition, MaTroll's dubious claim that one must have a FEC in order to gain a residency permit is laughable. There are a number of people on this forum, present company included, who have obtained "Z" visas and residence permits with having an "Alien Employment Permit" and never having had a FEC. I would suspect MaTroll also dug this bit of misinformation up from a non-authoratative website not unlike SAFEA's.

The best way to show MaTroll is a whacko is by actually calling the Guangzhou, Shanghai or Guangzhou PSB's Entry & Exit Administration or, better yet, by paying them an actual visit. To call, just dial 96110110. Listen carefully when they laugh and use the word * 怪物 when you tell them that MalSol insists you can work on an "F" visa.

* 怪物 -- Roughly equivalent to troll in Chinese.
