I spent a year teaching in Seoul and the experience as a whole was largely positive. Now I'm thinking of returning to Asia for another year, but was thinking about Japan this time. Two questions (for now):
1) Has anyone taught in both places? If so, please compare your experiences, weighing in with both positives and negatives.
2) IMPORTANT: Is it easy to find private lessons in big city areas of Japan (I was thinking of teaching in Tokyo or Osaka)? In Korea, I was able to save $25,000 during my year largely because of private lessons and a part-time, freelance editor position on the side. Is this doable in Japan, as well?
Thanks! |

1. Search function > Japan Korea
2. Read.
Quick answer: Both have positives and negatives.
Quick answer: Difficult to save that kind of money in a year.
Nice first post. Sweetpig7...nice user name. You must be a cousin of a regular poster here.

1. This web site http://seamonkey.ed.asu.edu/~jonb/ was written by a guy who worked in Korea, Japan, and Taiwan. The info is a little dated, but it's better than nothing.
I also suggest doing a search in the Japan forum using the SEARCH function, as this question has been asked a lot.
2. Simple answer is yes. You realize the size of Tokyo, don't you? There are plenty of people around willing to take private lessons. You can advertise in any number of ways, including on web sites like findateacher.com , but just remember to keep updating your name on them so you don't fall to the bottom of the active list. Know how to charge students, too, so you maximize your earnings instead of charging a pitiful 100-2000 yen/hour.
Freelance non-teaching work will be hit or miss, depending on your networking and abilities. Editing/proofreading work is highly sought after, so there is a lot of competition, again at pitifully low fees sometimes. |

Glenski: Thanks for the information!
canuck: What is wrong with my first post? I asked legitimate and relevant questions. I suppose I should take some time to post useless and snide replies to increase my post count. Then I could be like you. |

Not only did I provide you with a suggestion and relevant information to your questions, I get Mr. "I'm too lazy to use the search function because I think this is a really specific question that no one has asked on this forum before" type of attitude. Grow up. Stay in South Korea. |

I'm sorry. Next time I'll do my research first and keep in mind the presence of snide board veterans before asking anything. Thanks for the warm welcome! |

I'm not snide. Seriously, did you even make an effort at all? It really isn't too much to read the FAQ and do a quick search. That said, I DID give you information to your questions, although brief. It's funny you wanted more specifics...when they ARE available in other threads, in this forum. |

Knowledgeable, but snide. |

I'm planning on going to to Tokyo in a few weeks, but I have yet to secure a job. I don't want to go through one of the big programs (i.e. JETT, Nova, Aeon, etc.), but I don't have a working visa.
Question is: if I go, will schools be willing to sponsor me for a visa? Many of the job postings I see on the internet say "Applicant must have valid working visa..." it's kinda killing my confidence. Help me out people!
(My major was English and I also have a year in Korea under my belt) |
Canuck replies:
Yes, many companies will sponsor you visa. I assume you have a degree. A better route would be go come to Japan on a working holiday visa, if you are eligible, apply for jobs and change to a regular working visa.
Hmmm a poster who asks if Japanese companies will sponsor your visa gets a free pass? You must have been in a really good mood.
Honestly man, what sets you off? Perhaps both poster's inquiries could have been answered through the search function. One gets attitude the other a straightforward answer. Did you really go off on the first poster just because he reminded you of special someone? |

Perhaps.
Once again, loophole man makes an appearance. Don't you have somewhere to be? Shouldn't you be pretending you have a degree or something? |

We're often told in life not to get involved in other people's arguments. I find that spineless and I hate it when people don't support each other. So here goes:
Canuck - either you're a forum booster designed to keep people posting or really are Canada's Rudest Man.
Your remark to Yawarakaijin about loophole man is lame. Do you remember the thread about Teaching Without Degrees?
We've been through the facts and once it was proved you were wrong you didn't come back. If you have three years experience you can get a Specialist in Humanities Visa. I did it. It's simple. It's the law.
I don't mind people being wrong. If you had had the guts on that thread to acknowledge you made a mistake - all would have been fine. But you kept quiet. Until now - and you're back spreading false information.
Let's stick to the facts please. |
