Hi folks,

I am a 20 year old American undergraduate student hoping to teach English abroad over my summer break between May and August. I have been reading the forums on eslcafe for a while and have found that there are stark differences in seasonal job availability between countries. For instance, I read summer is the peak season in Vietnam while it a black hole in Romania.

It is very difficult to understand where the best opportunities are. I hope that some of you who researched or experienced this can give me a hand.

I don't know whether this hurt my cause; I am a BS engineering major. I don't have any esl teaching experience, however I have been employed as a tutor for, among other things, English writing.

I should say I prefer a big, interesting city in a safe country with loose/Western morals and a sizable population of young expats. I'm not looking to get rich, but it is important for me to break even with airfare and living expenses and to avoid imprisonment.

Thanks a lot.

Very little available for just summer hire in the ME. Most of it is so hot that everyone escapes for the summer.

You would likely have to be in country to find the few openings, and with no credentials, I fear that you may not earn enough to cover expenses.

I don't think the ME is your best choice.

Nothing like that in Saudi Arabia - or I suspect in the Middle East.

Serendipity ! ( sp? ) Anyway, you could be just the person for a place like Muscat, although the loose morals comment is a bit worrying....

There are lots of summer jobs available in Muscat for the summer programs - teenage classes but don't worry, the classroom management issues are almost nil - Omanis are very well behaved, by and large...

I have worked p/t and have friends who have done this as well at language Centers for this very thing - they have even flown in teachers from overseas - ticket is paid for, housing and a smallish salary but the point is that there is no cost to you and you come to a beautiful and hot place - if you are keen on diving, then Muscat is the place. You should be able to have a great experience, work reasonably hard but for only 4.5 days / evenings a week and then pocket some cash.

PM me if you want some more details......

If you want "Western morals' (whatever they may be) your options are clear: stay in 'the west'.

There are several countries, including Lebanon, Jordan and Egypt, where summer staff are recruited by language schools. However, I think your lack of both qualifications and experience would be something of a problem when it came to hiring.

WELL like I flipping said, some of us are trying to navigate through life earing a living- yes- many of us teflers have family (baggage or not- they still with us ) with us NOW. YOU are flippant with your comments. I would like you not to treat our bread and butter like your 'half tank of gas' engineering 'goatshite', it's our 'real life' you moron. It is not just a sojourn for you 'half lifes'(back packers in the yore days). PLENTY OF scare quotes for you - eat'em. Oh I'd love to experience THAT culture from close proximity. It's a griffenguld job man- get it in your bloody head. A lot of us wish we had taken up plumbing, but we are still here, because, we wanted to be here. That doesn't mean we gotta take you on holiday with us.
