I think I've just about had it with Korea. I have a public school offer (middle school) that I am considering but I want university experience and need to escape for a little while at least.
I've been studying Hanja (Korea's usage of Chinese characters) for about a year and although I only know about 100 or so I really love Chinese characters.
...
Uh... so... are universities a good place to start I got one offer from a university in Henan (?).
I am not hugely concerned about the pay but I'll probably need to make at least $600 USD to make good on my student loans. |

Seeing as you didn't say what qualifications you possess it is difficult to answer your question but, generally, uni jobs are ten a penny if you have at least a BA. A decent uni will request an MA but I've known some so-called top tier Chinese universities to ignore that as long as you "know someone". It can be a very cushy position as, if they give you a great schedule, you may only teach 2-3 days a week. Somehow I managed to change my schedule and taught all day for two days of the week which wasn't much fun at the time but the five day weekends made up for it!
Pay is generally quite low...if you mean saving $600 each month then that is about 5000RMB. It can be done if you live frugally and take on some extra work. |

Henan Province is still "old China."
Both inexpensive living and they still respect foreign teachers. It is culturally rich with history.
It is also "AIDS" central. |
That sounds pretty good except for the "AIDS" thing. Does that mean what I think it does? HIV?
The pay they offer is pretty low, 5000 to 5500 RMB. 20 hours a week, 30 to 60 students. No mention of holidays.
It's in Jiaozuo.
The school's sebsite doesn't seem to have any English options for navigation.
Does this sound typical?
I have a BFA and about a year and half of ESL experience, mostly with adults. |

How hard would it be to find side work in the area? |

5000 RMB per month is about "normal" for Henan and I'm told you can live comfortably on that, but don't expect to have anything like US$600 left in your bank account at the end of the month.
You should also be aware that Henan people have a reputation among other Chinese for being, shall we say, more dishonest than average...which is really saying something! |
