Siping is between Shenyang and Changchun, and if memory serves me right, the university is actually a very good university. The city, however, is not as modern as either Shenyang or Changchun.

I haven't been to Siping myself but according to my tourist map of Jilin the surrounding area is supposed to quite interesting with little volcanoes and crater lakes among the rolling forest.

I think it is a good place also . I was treated very well by the people there . They called me and we talked several times on the phone . My feeling is that they are honest and teachers stay for a long period of time . Maybe cold in the winter but your summers will be cool . I kind of regret not going there .

it is a sh@thole and the only thing it is known for is it's looney bin....close to Changchun..but with buses that do not run late into the night..you will be stuck in this one horse town..as a matter of fact..the horse is up on blocks....not even one good runnig horse there..but they do have a scene..on the weekends the young men gather on their small engine bikes down town and watch the trucks haul a$$ down mainstreet..or the only street...

Changchun is better these days..with the Ice this and that..some Asian wiener games there now..and they have a good motorcycle scene..but the bars are a little ExPat with a lot of German thuggery thrown in...still i enjoyed my time in Changchun and as my girls parents are from there..I still go once and a while..but never in the winter anymore..just to avoid that during Spring festival I fly her Mom, Dad and little sister to Beijing..and she is a Han..but let me tell you ...Mal buddy..a lot of those Manchu babes grow their hair til marriage...well suppose you gotta have something to keep you warm..while your waiting for the dirty deed...oh and that is another drawback...no access to the love canal in this back water town...although there are the barber shops...but that is when your wondering did Malsal say Manchu or mongrel...and speaking of mongrel..learn the Chinese character for "Dog" or your end up dining on Fido-licious

Malso and CJ this depraved scene occurs all over China . You got to look for the good . So far I have lived in 6 cities and everywhere I can find a Go club (weichi here) and I meet good people and in every park there are people doing tai-chi in the mornings . If you need a bar scene go to Shanghai or Beijing . If you want to learn Chinese and experience China go to these small towns . And what really matters is the qualilty of your students . If the students want to learn English then your time goes by easily if they are just putting in time a class of one hour can seem like four hours . I wanted to go to Siping because they had Korean students for me to teach . I spent 8 years in Korea and miss the people a great deal .

The second-largest ethnic group today is indeed the Manchu. But this is a far, far cry from saying that the Manchu are "THE MAJOR ethnicity."

Don't let names and history (Shenyang and its Imperial Palace being the original capital of the Manchu dynasty) confuse you. Random Internet browsing turns up the following:

Shenyang has 38 of China's 56 recognised ethnic groups, including the Han Chinese majority that make up 91.26% of Shenyang's population.

So you've also got your provinces wrong, buddy. Shenyang is the capital of Liaoning (not Jilin) province.
