Does anybody know of this place? A chelsea chan is recruiting for 20 ESL teachers here as appears on dave's job board. My first time to China. She says paycheck is for 6000RMB, it includes 4500 salary, 1000 airfaare reimbursement, and 500 meal allowance. 4-mo. contract, 20 lesson a week(40-45min classes). She will want to interview me. |

I'd steer clear of it. As I said below, they didn't answer my email, and still haven't. Perhaps it's because I'm in Jinan and they have no school to show me. Just another recruiter.

The advertisement states Jinan, however the job offered to me was actually in Kaili City, Guizhou Province, which might explain why there is no address for a school in Jinan.

Don't a lot of people go through recruiters to take up teaching positions in China?
I'm also a total newbie, but on the verge of leaving Australia to take up this position. Should I be backing out? |

Dunno. I don't know anything about Kaili, but the fact they have lied once is a bit of a warning. Are they offering the same salary and conditions in Kaili? |

Yes exactly the same salary and conditions. Which I thought was quite high for a place with a reputedly very low cost of living. I asked to speak to a previous FT at the school and they replied that they have not had any FT's there before, but offered contact details of someone who had been teaching with them for 2 years.
I admit I am dubious about this recruiter, however am drawn to the prospect of a 4 month contract with an okay salary/ package in a more remote place. I'm not sure if I should take the risk...
If the recruiter is dodgy, what is likely to happen? |

Many things....Visa problems, salary lies, accommodation problems, etc, etc...
If you noticed, in the link I provided, the same advertisment runs under two slightly different Company names...HanHan V HuaHan...both have the same contact email. Up to you to weigh up the pros and cons, but considering I didn't get any response from them, I know what I would do. In both ads, if I remember correctly, they wanted teachers for THEIR school...............which they haven't got! |

Middle school money now averages at 10,000RMB a month. They usually use a recruiter for administrative support, such as visa, apartment and airfare, etc. This is because of inability or laziness to do it themselves.
So they pay the recruiter and then the recruiter pays you (or the middle school splits the amount between the two of you). The recruiter usually makes about 1,500RMB a month per teacher.
Beware of creative language and the wording in your contract (make sure that the Chinese and the English say the same thing!) |

Yes plenty of people come here through recruiters as it is the easiest and most convenient way to get work here.
The key of course is to find the right recruiter and there are a number of these out there. I suspect that Chelsea may not yet be one of these so I join the others in cautioning you about her.
To me a good recruiter has invested in a company and a reputation. As such they should be operating under a company name, should have an office, a website, and pretty much be what they purport to be an established business. The type of recruiter who advertisers positions under their own name and from free email addresses and a mobile phone really has not invested in their venture and as such has nothing to lose from getting a bad reputation. More importantly they may not have a reputation as as soon as they get one they start advertising under a different name, email address etc. The infamous Alin Buuer being a good example of this.
Once you have chosen a recruiter then ask to speak with people that they have placed before. If you can speak to the current teacher at the actual placement school all the better.
Do your research on what to expect when you get here so that you know what to benchmark what the recruiter tells you against what others tell you to expect.

No dont back out, just exercise due caution. Dont expect everything to be perfect and dont expect that you are the lucky one who is being offered a high paying job with a small workload just out of luck.
If it sounds too good to be true then it probably is.
If the pieces dont fit together then there may be a problem.
Just use common sense and you should be okay. |

And of course a very easy way to get conned.
If convenient has anything to do with not having to go through the inconvenience of landing up in a "bumm-job" - then convenient in my book would be to make personal contact with the organisation you are thinking of working for - at least in that way you can get some kind of first-hand idea of what kind of folk you will be working with during your daily life as an FT - and more easily be able to obtain the e-mails of present and former FT's.
As Clark tells us research is a valuable thing - and any thinking person person will realise that researching a school through a middle-man who has an economic motive to get you over here - may cause some clouding of the waters!!!!
Recruiters - newbies beware |

Clearly a bogus offer! I have never come across a job offer that included pro-rated airfare! (Not that I am against it - in fact as an experienced old hand I would suggest you negotiate for pro-rating of your airfare!). What's also unusual is the length of the stint!
Besides that, someone hiring from Ji'nan and putting you in Guizhou province cannot know the situation on the ground there; Kaili is over 2000 kms from Ji'nan...
But someone else enquired here recently about working conditions in KAILI; I said very clearly then that Kaili as such is a good place to work; I recommend you find that thread and try to get in touch with the school that is looking to hire! |

I doubt many of the parents can speak English. If not, how can they evaluate an English teacher? (Especially a native speaker) |

It's about time that the British Council and the Australian IDP trademarked "IELTS".
Do they "teach" IELTS to the kiddy-winkies?
Or do the College students have their moms and dads at the back of the classroom supervising their activities and making sure that they stay awake? |
