Hello,
I am looking for information about ESL/EFL teachers traveling abroad with physical disabilities. In particular I am trying to find out if teachers have been subject to hiring discrimination, or alternatively if teachers have had good experiences.
I would appreciate as much information as possible.
Thank you

I don't mean to pry, but do you, or someone in particular that you're thinking of, have a physical disability? Maybe if you told us what it is?
Not just because I'm nosy, but I suspect that when it comes to discrimination, not all disabities are treated equally.
I am partially deaf, but as you would be unlikely to notice this in an interview, and I don't say, I've never had problems. I have worked with partially sighted teachers, and with one who used a cane to walk.
Another question may be about accessibility of services in the countries you're considering.
Best,
Justin |

I agree with Justin, the particular disability might make all the difference. As an aging person, I too have a partial hearing loss. But, in fact, it helps me be a better teacher as I get out right into the midst of the students to hear them well and it makes for a much friendlier and personable classroom.
That said, a serious mobility problem can be a real issue. I have worked at many colleges and universities with five story buildings and no elevator. Not only that, but a class on the fifth floor of one building followed by a class in a building down the hill, up another hill and up to the fifth floor - all in the ten minute break between classes. Even as a reasonably fit person I have found myself a bit out of breath as I began taking attendance in my next class. |
