I have always wondered if anyone in the CIA used the cover as an ESL teacher to gain access to a country, especially China and Russia.

I live in China and I have told people that I was in the CIA and English teaching is just a cover. A few suckers get quiet thinking I might be for real, because I pull the CIA tale in a bar usually.

Agent Senor, what have you seen in Red China?

1.) Bad drivers.
2.) Weird food.
3.) Sexy yellow women.
4.) Baozi
5.) The most capitalist country on Earth under a Communist banner.
6.) a lot of Volkeswagens.
7.) No dragons.
8.) Beautiful rich people in Shanghai. A martini costs a moth's salary of a rice farmer.
9.) Jiang Zemin is still fighting the Japanese.
10.) Chinese children are dumb.

END CIA REPORT>

i would imagine the CIA use all sorts of covers, including ESL teachers. however, anyone that says they're in the CIA after downing a few beers is probably not in the CIA.
there more likely to be a FBI, as in Four Beer Idiot.

I met a gentleman in Cambodia who was ex-CIA. He had tried to startup a business in Nam. He was wearing his arm in a cast after departing from that country in a hurry. Something about a misunderstanding over a motorcycle (predictable). A crowd of Viets came after him with sticks and trashed the imperialist dog.

I've also hear about the CIA placing young agents on local newspapers such as the Taipei Times, The Straits Times, etc, where they compile financial and political data for their masters.

BTW, the CIA are considered to be bleeding heart liberal softies by other security agencies such as the NSA and Defence Intelligence, not to mention the FBI, to whom they are known as TBARS, Those *beep* Across the River (The Potomac River). I gleaned these nuggests from books in a books hop in PP, which contained a conspicuous amount of recently published second hand books about espionage! Hmmm. Wink

For one reason or another, a company I taught for in China had a few visits from spies. The company had plenty more going on than just ripping off students. Not only were they working on starting up a magazine, but designing software for India.

The first spy was from the Chinese central gov...not sure the correct name of the dept...maybe PSB...not an expert here. The guy shows up one day to ask for a job. He makes it clear that he used to work for the gov. and his salary wasn't important. He just wanted to work on the magazine. He stays for a few weeks and then up and disappears not bothering to take his pay. Presumably he was checking out the company because they were getting involved in publications.

The second spy looked like an Asian version of Gomer Pyle...but was a former commando and studied in sunny california. Besides gathering info for his homeland, a little SE asian city-state not worth mentioning, he did "research" for the IMF...and happened to be in town to get the software venture up and running...and probably more than what I saw.

CIA agents are just the beginning...what about all the industrial spies running around? For those teaching at language training centers, has anyone had a spy from a rival school? I wouldn't be surprised.
