I read here that teachers can average 15 dollars (usd I guess) per hour. But, how much are you making? How much are your monthly expenses?

In Thailand I'm teaching 20 hours per week at a government school and taking home 34000b ($950 USD?) in a low cost of living area (Surat Thani). My total expenses are about 20,000 b per month (500 usd). So I can save a little bit. I'm hoping by moving to Vietnam I could save even more... plus other reasons- learning Vietnamese...

Can some teachers that are there give me a realistic expectation of the same kind of hours in Vietnam and what that would give for take home pay?

I'm from the states, have a masters degree, no teaching cert and no English teaching Certificate. I guess I'd teach high school or primary since the consensus here seems to be that universities pay poorly.

Can anyone give me an idea?

Thanks for any help!

thaipulse, we are happy to help answer any questions you have, but that one has been beat to a pulp here and it just isn't worth going all over again. That one specifically is on this page.

Important factors and questions here are in short: Did you bend yourself over and work for only one school when there are 100 threads telling you not to? How well are you networked? Can you negotiate or are you the type of person that takes the scraps that a school gives you? Are you even thinking about the work permit here since you don't have a TESOL cert OR have you read otherwise how not to ever be required to need one anyway? Have you read anywhere that you really need to be here to get a decent shake on salary and work hours? Only the big McDonald schools hire over the internet and they are not going to give your 'hand' a fair shake. Know that you probably should wait about a month from now as the Tet holiday is coming next week and schools are already closing. If you arrive in about a month and hit the pavement, I would suspect that you have jobs at 2 or 3 schools within a few weeks.

Now searching for that type of information above should have nearly every question you have about working in Vietnam answered.

I guess I do post with a lot of wind sometimes Laughing I do agree though that a lot of posters would do themselves (and the vet expats here) a lot of time saving by just reading a little bit first. Granted some details may always need a detailed explanation; but after all the information that has been put here and on my site, you figure that someone would at least look deeper for their own piece of mind rather than a quick skim and post if they are seriously considering Vietnam.

No offense thaipulse as your questions are valid, but there isn't one in your post that can't already be viewed with contibutions from a hundred different teachers by simply spending an hour or two browsing the forum here. You will find that the answer to your question of pay differs per individual and your lifestyle, varied employment opportunities, and work ethic are a large part of that equation (and again, that is already an exhausted topic). Many Expats old and new have already shared years worth of hard earned experience and I think that many have stopped responding due to the boredom of repetition in some of the questions very similar to sitting in a class with a teacher that plays hangman all day.
