My first teaching job after getting my CELTA (then known as CTEFLA or some such thing) way back in 1991 was in Bangkok. It was a memorable experience, but after several months the horrific traffic conditions wore me down, so I moved on. Overall I loved Thailand, though, so Im now thinking of returning, but this time perhaps heading up to Chang Mai.
I now have a Masters in TESOL and for the last seven years have done all of my teaching in universities (Seattle, Istanbul, and Odessa). I have also been doing some teacher training as of late. While I am considering Chang Mai primarily for the quality of life, I would eventually need about 50, 000 baht a month to make this doable. Am I being totally unrealistic? I would prefer a university job, but wouldnt mind working in a language institute if it would also involve some teacher training. |

You could try doing a search, making sure that you add an "i":
Chiang Mai |

| Right you are--being a teacher and all I should be more careful with my spelling. Doing a search where? |

| Here on Dave's for starters. I know that Chiang Mai is frequently discussed on the Thailand forum. |

| Right you were! There was indeed a lot to be found just by doing the search. Unfortunately it seems that I actually was being totally unrealistic, at least as far as the unis are concerned. Looks like ECC for one does some teacher training, though--five times a year with the CELTA course. Does anyone know how much more trainers might get paid, assuming one has the qualifications, experience, timing to actually get hired? |

| The two main universities are CMU and Payap. With a Master's degree the average teacher gets between 24,000- 30,000 Baht a month. The only places that I know where you can make 50,000+ are in BKK. Even 40,000 is pushing it in Chian Mai. Chiang Rai does pay a little more if that interests you. You might also want to look at the Private Language centers like CMU's Language Center. They pay better but have limited positions. |
