I have been searching for information on the city but haven't found much. Is anyone living there or been there who wants to share their thoughts on the city? In particular i would like to know about the following
1. Local transport+prices
2. Friendliness of the locals
3. Nightlife : bars and clubs
4. Foreigner community
5. Weekend Activities
6. Prices in general
7. The environment- noise/pollution/ etc.
8. Food/restuarants
Any info would be more greatfully received.
Many thanks! |

There was a school there with an English D.O.S. which was recruiting a couple of years ago and the salary was around $500 per month plus free accom. etc.
As far as the place is concerned, although the actual city centre is quite pleasantly laid-out in typical Soviet era style, this is Ukraine with all that implies!Nearby is the Donbas coal-mining area, one of the most polluted regions in eastern europe and the scene of many fatal accidents as the ancient infra-structure frequently capsizes due to methane explosions etc!
Although there is a small elite in Donetsk which has plenty of money, just like other towns all over the Ukraine and Russia, the majority of people survive on very low incomes. As further proof of the reality, the weekly Friday Donbas Avia flight to Cyprus where I live is usually full of people coming here to work in menial jobs or going home to visit relatives etc, along with lovely, willowy girls who come to be exploited in our notorious so called 'cabarets!!'
A very good friend of mine from there has lived in Moscow for over 10 years since her husband died, mainly because she saw no future in Donetsk,or Ukraine for her two children and with $500 per month, you won't be a millionaire but quite well off by local standards-and find plenty of desirable company so you won't be lonely either!Unlike Moscow, the Ukrainians are quite open and friendly, but be careful with your money and valuables there etc! |
