Hola!
I am considering a move to Mexico to work for TEC. I have found some useful information about TEC on the forum, but I would welcome more. I have been looking specifically at Culiacan, Monterrey, Tampico, etc. I have a MS in Education (TESOL) and 10 years experience. I speak Spanish.
It seems that TEC (prepa) jobs pay around 15,000 pesos for a 40 hours week (20 contact hours). Benefits such as the national medical and pension programs. How much should I expect to pay for med and pension each month? Four weeks paid vacation (not sure if this includes national holidays or not). 20% tax for Americans??
I am married with two small kids. This seems a decent wage (does it get any better?) to live on and perhaps save some as we live a modest lifestyle. Whaddyathink?
Can anyone shed more light on the actual working conditions? Is there a split shift involved or usually 8/9-5? They say they use blackboard, but the classes are face-to-face, no?
How about the cities listed above? Any info on those cities or TEC would be appreciated.
Mil gracias!!! |

I can only speak to Culiacan because I haven't been to the other cities yet. The pay is higher there than Mazatlan, but so is the rent. It is the cultural and government center of our State. We have relatives and friends there so have visited often. You would be only 2 1/2 hours from the beaches of Mazatlan and could join the parade of "Culichis" who come down on weekends and holidays. Best of both worlds. Summers are hot.
I have only worked part-time (evenings) in the Tec campus Mazatlan, which has always been known to be rather disorganized and pay less than Culiacan campus. It suited my purpose at the time but is way too far out of town to be much fun for long. Lots of things to consider. |

Tec campuses can vary quite a bit in pay and quality of experience... as Sam alludes to. I work full time at the Toluca campus. It has its pros and cons. PM me if you want more. |
