Hello all.

Further to my post on finding a school in Italy's north, a change of circumstances meant I didn't get there last October. Anyway, I'm looking to move out to Umbria or Le Marche in September this year. Does anybody have any experiences of the towns of Spoleto, Macerata or Ascoli Piceno? If you could give me some pointers on these places - good schools, the cost of rent in the area, the nicest places to live - that would be much appreciated. Really I'm after any information you may have on living and teaching in Umbria or Le Marche!

Can't comment on Spoleto or Ascoli (although both are nice towns with plenty of culture and things to do), but I live about 40km from Macerata.

I think there's a language school there, but have no idea where. There would be teaching opps I imagine, as it's a university city, but language schools in this area of central Le Marche are few and far between. However, I have seen ads for work in schools in Civitanova and Jesi - both some distance from Macerata. (Civitanova is on the coast, and Jesi quite close to Ancona.) In my opinion, you'd need to work for more than one school, or get a variety of clients in order to survive and live well.

Rents are cheap in comparison to Rome. In the small town near where I live, you can get a flat starting around 300 euro per month.

I know Le Marche very well.

Some OK schools include the British Embassy School in Falconara, the Academy in Sengiallia and I believe that the Brit Institutes in Fano, Pesaro and Urbino are OK, although I personally won't work for the BI.

I worked at a school in Fano for a while once, the students were great but the boss not, it's called the International School of Languages, avoid.

And lest anybody think this is an embittered sacked teacher sticking the boot in, sure, it does happen, so if you want to work there fine but keep what I said in mind at the interview and ask a lot of questions.

Try to get in at the British School, maybe Riccione or Rimini.
