I would like to know if there are any chain stores in Japan that stock
items along the lines of what you would see in a Target or Wal-Mart
shop that you can find almost anywhere in America.
I know that the convenience stores
have a good, albeit limited (and
pricey) selection of mostly food items and some household items.
However, I want to know if there are
larger stores that carry the sheer
variety of items you would see in
a Target, etc. Also, are there
even larger stores, along the lines
of Costco?
Please tell me the webpage addresses of these shops. I would
like to browse their selection online.
Thanks. |

Costco has 4 stores in Japan (http://www.costco.com/frameset.asp?trg=info%2Fcostconews%2Flocations%2Flocations%2Easp).
Ito Yokado is perhaps the cheapest retail chain in Japan (everything from clothes to food). http://www.itoyokado.iyg.co.jp/iy/index1_e.htm (the English website is not as extensive as the Japanese one). |

I think it depends on where you live in Japan. There is no Ito Yokoda near me but there was one in Okayama where I used to visit a friend and the previous poster was right about it being pretty cheap and having lots of stuff. Where I live (Yamaguchi-Ken) there is a chain called Nafco which has lots the kind of things you'd find at K-Mart and at very reasonable prices. |

Wal-Mart now owns 33% of Seiyu and is slowly building themselves in Japan via Seiyu. I'm not sure how much that translates into Wal-Mart stuff being stocked in Seiyu stores but changes in distribution practices and mgmt should have an effect.
Costco is here as others mentioned. |
