PostPosted: Sat Feb 17, 2007 6:16 pm    Post subject: Advice for JET Program interview Reply with quote

I had a job interview on Thursday. I know that this is a popular program and that other people have interviews, so I want to give you some advice. My head is still spinning, so I don't remember everything, but I'll try to help as much as I can.

I know that the interviewing process is different depending on which part of the world you are in. I am in the U.S. I was interviewed by a panel, which consisted of 3 people. They will ask you easy questions, slightly difficult questions, and tough questions. This is what they asked me.

Why did you apply for the JET Program? Why do you want to go to Japan? Tell me about yourself.

They will ask you to give them some facts about Japan. This could be anything. They asked me to name a famous Japanese person. It helps if you do some research before the interview.

I have never traveled to a foreign country before, so they asked me questions about that. They talked about how I would have to deal with culture shock. They gave me a couple of scenarios and asked me how I would handle it, and would I have a problem with it. They also asked me how I would interact with the locals.

They also asked questions about my teaching skills. They said that Japanese students are different from American students and gave a few examples. You have to explain how you would deal with shy kids, kids that are from a different culture, etc.

I'm back again! Very Happy
That other post was getting too long.

There will also be former JET participants at the interview site. You can ask them questions. The people that I met were very helpful.

One of the things that they said was that the people that run the JET Program are looking for people that are flexible and open-minded. This type of attitude will help people adjust to their new environments better and they are more likely to stay until their contract expires.

Another helpful piece of advice they gave me was don't have any expectations. This will also help you.

Rolling Eyes Useful information was provided in the old thread you started, yet you feel like you need to start another one?

Here goes another self-righteous, idiotic, condescending person. Rolling Eyes
Like I said in my first post, I (unlike you) am trying to help people. Your advice was not helpful. I (unlike you) want to give everyone up to date information. I've said it before, and I'll say it once again: Since you have nothing better to do with your life than abuse other people, you can go screw yourself.

I guess adding information to a thread YOU started on the exact same subject is beyond comprehension.Confused Please keep your tone civil. As a potential JET reject, you'll need your energy to search for a dispatch job.Confused

Don't get mad at me just because I gave you a taste of your own medicine. Treat others like you want to be treated. It's quite obvious that you want to be treated like garbage.

You are NOT God. Therefore, you do NOT know everything there is to know. So, get off of your high horse and come back to reality. Better yet, go take your medication, because you are having a manic episode.

You do realise that several of the recruiters for JET read here and take note of who says what, don't you? Leaping to attack someone so easily is not going to stand you in good stead in Japan and won't do your chances any good if you're identified.

OP

It sounds like you got an easy interview. Mine included the scholar (the one who'd never stepped foot in Japan) banging her fist on the desk and accusing me of lying when I said that I'd been snowshoeing in the past after first asking me how I would teach a particular point of American culture that I was unaware of (I'm from Canada, was interviewing in Canada and was prepared to talk about Canadian culture- knowledge of which and teaching ability was what the interviewer was supposed to be testing). I later found out she had no background in anything related to Canadian studies or Canadian History and apparently didn't really know much about the particular aboriginal group that she asked questions about (even though that has come up exactly one time in the last 3.5 years on JET- and it was "Inuit people look like Japanese people, eh!"- said in Japanese).

The former JET had only stuck around for one year in Japan and had actually used sick leave after she finished all of her vacation for the year making trips back to Canada every eight weks or so. She also lived in a city and said it was the same as any city anywhere. She learned approximately zero Japanese during her year, and apparently made a similar amount of friends in Japan from what I later found out.

The Japanese person hadn't been in Canada for very long and his list of questions were ones that it is illegal to ask in interviews in Canada (age, religious affilation etc). I just answered them truthfully. But then, I've been asked the same types of questions by Canadians who are totally aware that they are asking illegal questions, as well.

Treat others like you want to be treated? It's quite obvious that you want to be treated like garbage. You're half-way there with your posts. Rolling Eyes

I think it is you who have nothing better to do other than abuse other people. It is you who probably could use a hand-shag. I'm not mad at all. It's obvious that you don't have a way with words nor do you have the common sense to refrain from name calling and threats (in addition to the ones I have received from you via the PM system) Rolling Eyes I don't take medication, nor do I need it. Please look at my posts and you will see that I am both helpful, informative and direct.

If you insist of name calling and threats, I think you should consider moving on. It's unprofessional and uncalled for. If these continue, I will have no other course of action but to forward the messages to the moderators.

I'm really sorry you can't handle the truth.

Wow! Shocked

I'm sorry that you had such an awful experience. The panelists that interviewed me asked me a few tough questions, but they were never ignorant or rude. I hope you get the job. You deserve it after all the mess that you had to go through. If you don't get the job, I hope that you will find a good job that has decent managers. Sheesh.
