What are considered to be decent salaries in Shanghai in
A) The school provided accomodations?
B) The school doesn't provide accomodations?
Also, any good websites aimed specifically for teaching in Shanghai or Nanjing?

How long is a piece of string?
I have never worked in Shanghai but I would imagine that it is an expensive place in which to live. Sometimes a salary offered can be negotiated depending on the teachers relevant academic qualifications, work experience, on the market price for the job, and on the supply and demand for the job.
Some job advertisements in China offer RMB X per month for 16 teaching hours and tell you that this RMB X is more than a local Chinese professor earns. In reply I say, a local Chinese professor can legally earn money from other sources (publications, tutorials, etc.), as a foreigner we are often not legally allowed to earn income from other private sources.
That's all I want to say, sorry if the answer I gave is not 12 x 1000. |

Yes, I know it hard to say exactly, but it is VERY difficult to negotiate if I have no idea what others are making and what the average is. I know what it is for a small rural town, But Shanghai is a large city. So does anyone know what a good salary is?! |

You must also factor perks into your hourly wages:
- a one-year visa: around 2000 RMB (incl. medical exam);
- airfare: between 5000 and 10'000 per one-year contract,
prorated if working fewer than ten/twelve months;
- holidays: Some public schools pay a reduced salary (this year!),
though they offer a 2200 RMB travel bonus at the end of the first
semester;
- some schools do not pay you during their summer recess season -
thus you have pay for ten months (though you are being hired for
twelve months);
Until fairly recently, all perks and our basic pay combined amounted to about 30 to 50 kuai an hour (period).
The good nes is that since this year, some schools actually pay you 100 per hour worked. That is some 8000 RMB a month for up to 20 hours a week.
This is at public schools; private schools are a different category (fewer paid holidays, higher hourly wages, less job stability due to changing time tables). |
