What are the pros and cons of applying in person for a teaching job and applying online? If one does apply in person what is the expected dress code...please telll me sandals (good sandals, nice covered toe sandals) are acceptable, I can't imagine wearing dress shoes in the Saigon heat. I've been to VN twice, and will arrive in May, just wondering what to prepare for.

Yeah, you can even wear your birthday suit if you want. And have a beer can in one hand and joint in other. Teach better when you're feelin good, eh?

Send CV/letter by email & get interviews arranged before you arrive. Don't wear sandals to interviews or to work. The sort of schools which employ sandal-wearers aren't the sort of schools you'd want to work for!

Bedtiger:
I think on this occason (on this one, rare occasion!) Chuck's comments aren't a dig at Vietnam but a sarcastic response to someone who thinks wearing sandals to an interview is acceptable. I think...though I could be wrong Very Happy

Whoa,

Mista bones.

Somebody got there widdo feelings hurt.... Wink

For the interview I'd do the shoes. But I do think wearing dress shoes (or any type of shoes) is not practical, especially during rainy season.

Sandals & socks Snaff?!?!? The horror! I'd rather wear a pair of VNese clown shoes.

Ties - agree that ties are a waste of time & effort, but surely your school has aircon, & they don't expect you to wear your tie while travelling to & from work? Agree that a decent shirt & smart trousers should suffice - I used to work with some teachers who owned one moth-eaten, threadbare, pho-stained tie, & who would've looked smarter without it (though to be fair it did hide the beer stains on their one shirt Very Happy )

Yes, sandals and socks.

The sandals are black. High quality material. Clean. Look good. Three straps on the front and one on the back. It's kind of like a "half-shoe." This way my feet can breathe and I don't suffer from "stinky shoe, sock, and feet syndrome." Socks are dark black. They match, and as well with the trousers. They don't stand out at all. Honestly, I don't think many people even notice nor pay attention.

The general rule seems to be, the crappier/more amateurish the establishment, the more emphasis on wearing ties.
