On the men thread I mentioned Balans and Baba mentioned that Balans was now a micro brewery and serves its own beer. I sampled their beers last night and enjoyed. They only have 4 beers- crystal, special. blanc and caramel(my fave) costing either 5 or 6 lira for a 50 cl glass. They also have 20 cl testers and 30 cl small ones for the girls(faustino Wink )

Although the beers are obviously better than Efes, etc. I dont think they are quite on par with Taps http://www.tapsistanbul.com/taps.htm ... sorry Altug.
But they are half the price.

Are there any other micro breweries in Istanbul apart from the 2 I mentioned

btw The reason I went to Balans was to see the Rugby and yes I came away happy. Scotland won incase you didn't know Very Happy

İ loved the Kristalweizen they serve at Balans!! İt comes very close to the German original, just wished they would do the Hefeweizen, too.
Taps is wonderfull, too. There must be a German working there, cause they make their own Klsch.
sigh, İ wish I could have brought a few bottles of decent German beer with me.....

No, it is in the cupboard under my stairs and consists of a plastic bin into which I brew using non-alcholic beer, sugar and yeast.

Any preferred non-alc beer thrifty? Do you find any particular brand makes a better brew? I used to work with a guy who swore that king bob vodka mixed with non alc Stella was the best.

San Miguel is considered the best but I use the cheapest wherever I find it.

Could I make cider using a similar method do you think?

I could murder a pint of Scrumpy, I really could.

For authentic west country scrumpy don't forget to float a dead rat in the top of the vat ...

perhaps a stupid question, but if ginger beer is yeast based, is it alcoholic? If bottles blow up, is it a good sign that it is alcoholic?
