This whole border run escapade every 90 days is kinda a crazy concept to me. I mean, I'll do it if that's what has to happen, but...

I'm wondering. I have read that if you want to forgo the border runs and are found out when leaving CR, that you will only be fined $50. Is this true? If it's only $50, then why do the border runs at all? (apart from having a nice vacation in Nicaragua or Panama) To run for the border every 90 days could get expensive (especially on a teacher's salary). So the question is: Can you stay in CR for, say a year - without doing any border runs and still exit the country only paying a $50 fine - or would the fine be higher because you had been there a year without ever leaving?

Check the blog at www.costaricaclassroom.blogspot.com--there were several very detailed entries on Bruce and Lisa's border run to Nicaragua, which answered a lot of the questions I had.
