Hello... Please help me!... It's time for me to come back to Istanbul. I've been away since 2005, and after teaching in 2 other countries I've realized that Turkey's where I want to live again.. I wanted to go home to the states, but that will have to wait for obvious reasons...Now, I realize a lot has changed... especially since the world economy has gone to the dogs... I've asked my Turkish friends about the situation there, and their responses have been that it's no worse than anywhere else.. But what I'd like to know about mostly is teaching job availability these days.. I'm an experienced EFL teacher with almost 20 years under my belt, so I should qualify to teach just about anywhere.. (adults/kids).. But, if there are few jobs and hundreds of people scrambling for them, then that would affect my decision to come back.. So, simply... howz the job situation? And, what about rent? My Turkish friends say it has been coming down lately and there are lots of "discounts" (?)..... Any additional info about any other remarkable changes in the past 4 years would be greatly appreciated.... Is it a pipe dream? Worth it to come back? I don't need to get rich ( ).. I know what it's like there.. Just wanna be comfortable and save a little... like before.. And have a grand time back with some loved ones... |

| Hi. this isn't going to be too much help, but I am in the same boat. I studied abroad in Ankara in 2003-03 and am DEFINITELY returning (to Istanbul or Izmir this time) at the end of April. I only have tutoring experience and am thus a newbie, but I am confident. I have a TESOL certification and work as a writer/editor in NYC now. Maybe we can put or heads together. I'll let you know, refikagurz, what i find out when i land there! I too am hoping for a rent bargain. |

| If you've got 20 years TEFL experience you should be fine. Saving might be tough, but you'll definitely get a job and be able to live comfortably and travel around the region. |
